The article, apparently, was deleted from the Chinese website where it was originally posted. Done because it was false or to reduce panic?

Coronavirus: Hubei government deletes report claiming Covid-19 could damage male fertility

Men who have contracted the disease and recovered should seek medical advice regarding ‘theoretical’ risk to their reproductive health, Wuhan hospital says

Article was widely shared on social media despite being pulled from provincial government’s website just hours after being uploaded

It is theoretically possible that Covid-19 could be damaging to men’s reproductive health, according to an article published on the Hubei government’s website on Thursday, only to be removed a few hours later.

Men who had contracted the disease and recovered from it should seek medical advice on whether it might have had a detrimental impact on their fertility, said the piece, which was produced by a team from the reproductive medicine centre at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei.

While there was no evidence to suggest the infection could damage the male reproductive system, it was theoretically possible as the coronavirus was genetically similar to the one that caused Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome), it said.

The infection could result in “impairment of immune homeostasis in the testes”, which could cause orchitis – an inflammation of the testicles – which in turn could reduce a man’s sperm count and possibly lead to infertility, it said.

Both Covid-19 and Sars invade cells by combining with an enzyme called Ace2, which exists in large amounts in the testicles, as well as in other organs like the kidneys and heart.

Men who had contracted the disease should seek medical advice “so that problems can be detected and treated as early as possible”, it said.

The Hubei government declined to say why the article – which was widely shared on Chinese social media before being removed – had been deleted.

Qi Guangchong, an andrologist at Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Shanghai, said is was not uncommon for viral infections to cause problems with the male reproductive system.

“Many viruses have been proved to affect male fertility, including those that cause hepatitis B and mumps. A third of mumps patients develop orchitis, and in some cases the testes get smaller, leading to infertility,” he said.

“I have received a few Sars patients with infertility over the years, but the sample is too small to draw any conclusion,” he said.

“For those who have contracted the new virus and plan to be fathers, I’d suggest they do a fertility test.”

According to a separate study by urologists at Suzhou Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University that was published last month on MedRxiv.org – a platform for papers that have not been peer-reviewed – the novel coronavirus may directly bind to Ace2-positive cells and damage patients’ kidneys and testicular tissue.

Such damage to the testes may lead to infertility and testicular tumours, it said.

While it has been well reported that men die at a higher frequency than women of Covid-19, there has not yet been any further breakdown to separate out statistics for men on Androgen Deprivation Therapy (castration, whether chemical or surgical) for prostate cancer. There are enough such men that studies will eventually be done. They have already been proposed. There is already published medical research on ADT and immune response, although Covid-19 is too recent to have been a part of the research.

It is known that historical eunuchs and castrati lived an average of 15 years longer than intact men. While the reason is unclear, partial immunity to various diseases has been the most widely suggested reason. India’s hijra are less susceptible to tuberculosis, for example. Lack of teenage male reckless behavior and lower reactive aggression in adults have also been suggested as contributing, so it’s probably not ONLY stronger immune systems.

Those eunuchs here who are not on testosterone replacement therapy may have some protection against Covid-19.

I'm wondering if there is a link between Truvad / PrEP antivirals for HIV and decrease in Covid-19 infection. With so many men on PrEP, should be very easy to find out.

Additional analyses showed that testosterone reduces levels of certain transcription factors (regulatory proteins) that ordinarily prevent Module 52 genes from “turning on.” In other words, higher testosterone levels result in more Module 52 expression. Several Module 52 genes have known immune-system connections; activation of one of these genes, for example, results in the accelerated differentiation of cells whose job it is to suppress, rather than foster, immune response. These connections make the interactions of the genes with testosterone an intriguing target of further exploration by immunologists, physiologists and drug researchers, Davis said.

While it’s good to have a decent immune response to pathogens, an overreaction to them — as occurs in highly virulent influenza strains, SARS, dengue and many other diseases — can be more damaging than the pathogen itself. Women, with their robust immune responses, are twice as susceptible as men to death from the systemic inflammatory overdrive called sepsis. So perhaps, Davis suggests, having a somewhat weakened (but not too weak) immune system can prove more lifesaving than life-threatening for a dominant male in the prime of life.

And when we consider that more men are dying from this than women https://www.boston.com/news/health/2020 ... -men-women, and that many of those men are in an older age-range; lower testosterone amounts, it makes me worried to say the least.

My last TRT injection was december 2018, and to be honest, I wish I could quickly have another shot right now to cover me for 3 months. But there's no point considering that now. I'm going to have to be more extreme with self-isolating.

To those of us with low-T levels, we SHOULD be worried in my opinion.
