Bilateral inguinal hernia repair V bilateral orchiectomy. Which is worse

Post by Cseriess (imported) »

So I just had bilateral inguinal hernia repair. It was laparoscopic. Does anyone know how that compares pain wise to bilateral orchiectomy?

Well, I had inguinal hernia repair (left side only) in 2003 and bilateral orchiectomy (through scrotum) with scrotum removed in 2013. Because I had the scrotum removed at same time I had more trauma than a dude would if he just had his nuts removed through the scrotum. I would say it was about the same, pain wise, even with the sac removal. Not much pain, really, quite manageable for me and only for couple of days. Was castrated on Monday afternoon and flew back on Wed. Could have gone back to work but had week off.

Also, I just read this on Wikipedia, because I saw your concern about cancer: "The inguinal orchiectomy is a necessary procedure if testicular cancer is suspected. While it is possible to remove a testicle through an incision in the scrotum, this is not done when cancer is suspected because it disrupts the natural lymphatic drainage patterns. Testicular cancer usually spreads into the lymph nodes inside the abdomen in a predictable manner. Cutting the skin in the scrotum may disrupt this and cancer may spread to the inguinal lymph nodes, making surveillance and subsequent operations more difficult."

Thanks for the info. I know I will get an orchiectomy at some time, just have to go the last 10%! I haven't been taking any pain meds, apart from a couple of acetaminophen at bed time, and coping. Walked the dog today. My penis isn't swollen but it has turned dark purple. My scrotum is swollen and also dark purple.
