So wife had an accident two hours from home in our fair capital city. Car looks sideswiped and got towed off. Bags had deployed. She had minor pain in her lower back and decided not to go to hospital. I picked her up and now back home.
Appreciate advice from anyone who had been thru it.
First, her car. I am not terribly fussed about it. 2009 Impala with 130,000 miles. We had pretty well milked it. She said it was driveable. She got it out of the middle of the street. Right now it is in impound with, I am sure, storage fees. Who decides if it is totaled? Can I go, pay fees and take it to a shop or junk yard or does someone else make that decision?
Right now she is carless. We can make do sharing for now. If you figure the car was pretty well totaled, go ahead and get her another car? That can be done in a day.

Re: Accident
I'm sorry to hear that. Hope all is well with her. It is not uncommon for increased aches/pains or other issues to crop up a couple days after an accident. If that happens, please seek medical attention to make sure she is OK. Having worked several years as a paramedic, I can't tell you how many times I responded to a call for someone who was involved in an accident previously and was now having severe pain or worse.
Did you notify your insurance company? They will make a determination if it is totalled. Likely, a 2009 with 130K miles will be totalled out and, depending on the insurance company, they may cut you a check right on the spot which you can put toward the purchase of a new car.
Good luck and I hope all turns out ok.

Re: Accident
Hey Arab Nights,
So sorry to hear about your wife's car accident. She should schedule a doctor's appointment even if she is feeling fine. Better safe in this case. I'm not a doctor and will leave it at that.
About the car. If you only have liability, the insurance company won't pay to tow it under the policy (yet, read on there is still hope from the insurance company)
However, many organizations come with roadside assistance that will tow a car. AAA, AARP, Good Sam, some credit cards and a few others.
Your insurance policy might not cover the tow if you don't have comprehensive on the car. However, your insurance policy might come with roadside assistance from another company that is independent of your policy.
Because our car is leased I think we have about five roadside assistance choices. Most will even tow the car from your driveway to a repair shop.
130k miles on a ten-year-old car makes it very worth trying to save. However, if you have decided to junk it, then have it towed directly to the junkyard not a repair shop. Because your roadside assistance won't pay for a tow from a repair shop only to a repair shop. The junkyard will charge you to come to get the car and most likely either pay you nothing or nearly the tow fee.
If you have decided to junk it there is one other option. Assuming you can use a tax write off, donate the car to your local PBS station. If you want to do that, have the car towed to your house and call the PBS station's donation line. They will tow it away for free and sell it at an auction. Then, you will get a letter from the PBS station confirming your donation and be able to put it on your taxes.
Whew.
Still, the main thing is that your wife is okay. If she won't go to the doctor, keep an eye on her for a few days. If you can't be home Monday, ask a friend to come over and stay with her. Some problems can take a few days to show up.
I'll say "hope that helped" because YMMV seems wrong.

Re: Accident
Standard procedure, at least here, for a car accident (no matter the type) is to stop, stay, and call the police. Have them make a report.
Notify your car insurance agent ASAP. They should take it from there, whether you have full coverage or not. You should be contacted by the insurance agent and the storage yard. Every one I've ever met has been really cool about billing, as they deal with "you" every day.
As for the bills, you can have towing and road service without full coverage. They are usually separate options. Here, it's like $5/year for towing/assistance. I fail to see why people don't get this. One tow, and you've shot 30 years of coverage fees!
I am with TopManFL on this one : a 2009 Impala with 130k on it is well worth saving if you can. An insurance estimator will examine it. If repair exceeds book value, then they will total it and cut you a check for that value. In which case, you may have the option to buy the car back and fix it yourself.
As with any crash, no matter how little the impact, you're going to have aches and pains. Still, as it happened with the car, I would go and get checked out. The driver, as far as I know, is always covered for that on the barest minimum of policies.

Re: Accident
Also depends on who’s at fault if another person hit you and you weren’t running red light or something the police should have done an insurance information form and if their fault you should file claim on their insurance you only need to get your insurance involved if they refuse to pay or provide rental etc.
