Sudden jump in psa
Hi. so my first psa test after stopping androcur in January, just came back at 8. Did anyone else have such a jump after chemical castration?

Re: Sudden jump in psa
He called me as soon as the result came back. Have an appointment with a urologist and another psa test before that. History of aggressive prostate cancer in my family, but this would be 10 years younger than my relatives died of it. Can't help but feel it's something to do with coming off of chemical castration

I'm lucky to have had such a good team. I now know to trust the PSA as an indicator that something down there needs further examination. My sweet young radiation oncologist said that she was going to have hers tested, as some women score positive on the PSA. Keep us posted, by all means.

I had a big, though temporary, jump in my PSA once due to a urinery tract infection, caused by kidney stones. All the best

Also make sure to avoid "vigorous" exercise, or sexual activity, within 48 hours of the test. I had one spike to 7.6, but it was after I rubbed one off in the morning before going to the lab :-/ I found that info on the UK NHS website, though never has been mentioned to me here in the States. But then both my primary doctor and urologist are both women, and neither has broached the subject of masturbation habits. I also have spin class and hard bike seats I can blame

Any number or test having to do with cancer is scary. So, first, make sure you take care of yourself. Eating, sleeping, etc. It's really easy to future trip the hell out of what might turn out to be nothing. Don't forget to give yourself credit for doing it right. Making sure you've followed up on all of your docotor's visits and blood work is something not everyone does.
One word of advice. IF (notice I said IF), the urologist wants to do a prostate biopsy, make it 100% clear that you want BOTH numbing shots and general anethsia. Many urologist want to do the procedure in their office. Some don't even use numbing shots, just bite your lip and it's only 12 "bangs". Adding in anestsia might mean it needs to be done at a surgical center instead of as an office procedure. Hold to your guns and insist on being both numbed up and put out like a light.
Also, good advice above about avoiding sex, excercise and any activity that puts pressure on your prostate. Even a stool softner for a couple of weeks before the test to make sure that a hard stoold doesn't push against your prostate.
You don't need luck, because it's going to be ok. So, instead I'll just say that you are doing it right.

I had the DRE first, then blood drawn. I think in the past it's been the other way round. Would the DRE be enough to change the result. The previous 2 tests were 2, 1.6 and then this one was 8.

Absolutely. A DRE (digital rectal exam) could cause an increase in your subsequent PSA test. I would also suggest that one PSA test is insufficent for a diagnosis. It is simply a reason to do more tests and exams. PSA tests can vary. I've had a series of very high PSA tests that were caused by a prostate infection. I had no other symptoms.

Re: Sudden jump in psa
I have another psa test this week. I have had tested atound 5 in the past, but a follow up test has always dropped back. This number was high, but can't help think it has something to do with coming off CC, i am back to having sudden and frequent erections. Having to masturbate 2 or 3 times a day, anonamous sexual hook-ups. So my prostate has gone from dormant to working hard, so despite my high risk for PC i am not too worried.
