Study of testosterone production in the brains of castrated rats

Post by seanthomas (imported) »

I recently came across an interesting Canadian study of testosterone production in the brains of castrated rats. It seems that when the gonadal testosterone is removed the rat's brain begins to produce it. Seems this phenomenon occurred in about half the test subjects. Doing research on humans physically castrated is next, but it's suspected the results will be about the same.

Perhaps this is one reason that a percentage of Eunuchs like myself maintain a relatively healthy sex drive.

Anyone else come across this or similar studies?

You really ought to put the publication information in your post so that others can find the article. Is it one by the young Indonesian scholar Erik Wibowo, whose PhD dissertation was on the sexual performance of castrated rats and who has gone on to conduct research on the effects of castration on prostate cancer patients and on voluntary eunuchs? He is currently teaching at a university in New Zealand.

Erik and I have been co-authors on two papers (so far) that are partially based on surveys done on the Eunuch Archive community. We have one more accepted, but not yet in print and another in draft form. I have previously offered to send copies of the papers to any EA member who would like them. See the second post on the thread at:

On a more personal note, the first time I met Erik was at a conference where I was interested in the subject of his presentation. I asked a colleague how I might recognize him in the crowd so that I could talk to him before his presentation. I was told to look for the person with a smile wider than his face. Erik was easy to spot across a large hall.
