Windows Fucking 10

I have spent the last 3 days reformatting and installing Windows 10 on my boss's laptop.

Why?

Because it's a pretty powerful laptop, and he got a good deal on it, but the loon he bought it off of didn't do the free upgrade from 7 to 10 correctly. Why he upgraded to begin with, I have no idea. I'm sure he's probably in mental institution by now. If not, he should be. Problem was, things had simply stopped working on it: the start menu, being able to access the control panel, the settings, all the important stuff.

There are simply no words for how much I hate Windows 10. It's an abomination, and that's being polite.

I hope that everyone on the team that produced it loses their spouses and children and all they hold dear to massive nuclear explosions, near their asses.

After a painful installation of the OS off of a USB stick, and then sixteen hours of updates and about 4,800 restarts, the son of a bitch has finally decided that it has all the updates that there are to have. At least, for another five minutes, I'm sure. Then it'll be another round of 20 to 40 gigs of updates which will be obsolete by the time they install.

Ah, back in the day, it took 37 minutes from insertion of the XP disc to being able to be online.

I can't even begin to list all of the annoying things that 10 does, that no one in their right mind would want to do. And yet the simplest tasks, such as sharing a folder on the work network, are damn near impossible to set up. The old Windows 2000 SP4 printing machine has the right idea. Try to connect to it, and it says "Fuck you!" Fortunately, I have a couple of old XP driven laptops that will happily talk to it. I am amazed at 10's proclivity to share everything, including a webcam view of my ass, with the whole world. But move a text file to my work computer? Forget it.

In short, if this damn thing screws up again, it's going out in the middle of the highway!

Here are just a few of the aggravations:

Screen savers won't work. Says the new video card is too old and can't run Direct 3D. Funny, the box says it does.

Desktop icons and screen res keep changing and moving. Half of them don't work. Restart, and you might get a 1024x768 screen. Restart again, and you get 1920x1080, or something random.

Device manager says video drivers are out of date. Windows can't find a new one. Driver from manufacturer's website installed, same thing: out of date. Need to update. Can't find an update. Reinstall latest drivers. Out of date...

Sleep mode is gone. Not even offered in shutdown menu, or power settings.

WIFI leaves MUCH to be desired. Half the time, it can't connect, or connects with "no internet". My laptop often does this. I just kick it, then it connects. I can't kick his, though. And the WIFI runs at a blistering 4MB/sec. Yet the driver is up to date, so says Lenovo.

So, all day today, I tried to resolve some of these issues with online study. Everything I tried, nothing worked.

Right now, the stupid thing is at the "take or leave it" stage. If it were me, I'd leave it!

I can remember saying the same thing when I first upgraded from Win98.

All subsequent operating seem to use Giga bites of storage and memory only to do less than Win98 did.

XP was a good stable platform sadly forced into obsolescence due to lack of browser support.

I never liked Win 7 and always viewed it as a poor substitute for XP and hungry for PC resources.

You also have to go through a service pack update and some 189 other patches before its up to date.

After win7 I do find 10 to be okay once you get used to it and my old laptop is a lot quicker for it.

It seems a bit "In your Face" and the graphics seem to shout at you.

I have decided for me Win 10 is the way forward from the sluggish Win7.

I wonder if Bill Gates is doing a bit of an Apple I phone thing by slowing down every ones PC's by strategic updates?

my main gripe was that they took my windows start sound and windows close sound away. I had an audio clip from the 1985 Wargames movie for the start, ( Shall. We. Play. A. Game?) and for the close was from the Aliens movie, (Hicks, Game over man, Game Over!) even the options for this is gone from W10

Microsoft sucks period. I was force from MacIntosh when I needed software it couldn't run. Forced to the dark side of Windows 98 and MS has been fucking me every since. I liked XP well enough, Win 7 was okay. Then I woke up one morning to find that Microsoft had "graciously" upgraded me to 10 without my knowledge or consent. Yeah, I could have rolled back to 7 but then the Microsoft pirates stated they'd shortly be discontinuing support.

I remember the days when cellphones and personal computers were mere science fiction. Yeah, I now like the ability to Skype my kid in Europe - for free no less - and the fact I can access forums like this one. But I think I was happier in the days when a beeper was the pinnacle of communication technology.

Seriously, how do you really feel about Windows 10? Don't hold back, this is a safe space, you can tell us. <wink>.

I laughed my ass off reading your post. When they roll out "Windows 2020XpMeNt 2nd Edition" it will really be a bug fix for Windows 10, but they'll want $200 for the upgrade.

A zillion years ago I had a client that was installing the company I worked for's network into their network. We had specs for how they had to configure to connect. It was all pretty straight forward, nothing abnormal - the company I worked for just wanted to make sure we'd covered the bases.

So, the client buys a new office full of computers, a file server and a gateway. Our specs said, "Windows What the Fuck or higher". So, they installed their network and our network said, "who? why? how?". Nothing happened.

They called our help desk, our help desk said "it's your network, you fix it". Took me two days and a 100 mile round trip on a Saturday to get a disk with the upgraded code. The client had gotten their hands on "Windows What the Fuck 'Second Edition'", which technically was "or higher" than we'd said.

Microsoft had the company I worked for on its developers list and we should have know about the communications problem months ahead of time. But, no, it just got all Micro-Fucked up and I ended up losing a Saturday.

Well, driving from San Francisco to Los Gatos on 280 (which is one of the most beautiful drives in the world) and getting a free lunch from the grateful client at a wonderful Italian restaurant where they were playing botchi- ball (it looked fun and lots old men were playing it). But, the fact that I enjoyed the drive and had a good time with people I liked is not the point - I'm with you on Microfucked's incompetence.

If you still like Mac - two words - Parallels Desktop (it is virtualization software for Mac - it allows running Windows apps on Mac, though how well - it remains a question).

As for me - I left windows camp at some point between when Microsoft introduced Millennium and XP (One of the Millennium reinstalls took a lot of data from my drives, for no real reason. It was the final drop.) So now it is Linux for me.

But I do contact with windows at work, and well...

Yep, the last update on Windows 10 was what broke everything on the laptop so badly that almost nothing worked - hence the reinstall after a reformat. I have been lucky on my Lenovo laptop that I bought new last year, figuring that eventually, I would have to learn to deal with 10. I do have 7 on a DVD, and 7 pro on another DVD, never opened. I will cling to these for as long as I can!:-\
