a couple or three movie comments

Post by Dave (imported) »

I've seen a few movies over the past month that haven't inspired me to any sort of reviews.

THE GREAT WALL

This is the Matt Damon silliness set before Marco Polo discovers China while searching for gunpowder.

In this version of history, the Great Wall was built to hold off some creatures from the Green Meteor that (every 60 years) ate everything and regurgitated it for their queen who then restore them to huge numbers in another 60 years.

It's culturally inept. I mean even the old KUNG FU THEATER movies treated Oriental culture better.

However, it does entertain for a couple hours. Lots of creature fighting and gunpowder exploding and hot air balloons and more creature fighting.

LOGAN

This is the Final MARVEL movie with WOLVERINE played by Hugh Jackman. In it, Logan is old, bearded and living somewhere in the desert with an aged and "seizure prone" Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart). Hugh Jackman said that he was tired of being offered fighting and superhero and "wolverine" like roles and felt he was being typecast. (That's why he made THE GREATEST SHOWMAN)

I actually have a fondness for this movie and I'll watch it a few more times.

The Marvel superhero universe is completely malleable from movie to movie so the viewer has to accept whatever premise is pharted out of some writer's butt-hole.

In LOGAN, the world has stopped producing mutant children (or children with mutant powers) which was thought to be the next step of evolution because some dastardly mad-scientist discovered a virus that prevents mutations. That Mad Scientist is now raising children and making his own mutants to be souls killers and soldiers for the armies of the future.

(I've always wondered if when these Mad Scientists conquer they world that they figure out how to have another war, endless war because, after all is said and done -- what does on do with an army of mutant powered viscous and soulless killers when the war is over?)

That's my big problem with the entire -- the children raised by the villain are killers. The big, bad mutant nasty -- X24 -- is a psychopathic murderer with no conscience, no morality, it just kills.

That was my problem with THE HUNGER GAMES -- children sent out to kill.

My fondness for the movie is the way it redeems LOGAN and his hate for the world that spawned him as mutant.
