A “depressed” Filipino national cut off his penis and reportedly flushed it down the toilet on Sunday, in what police classified as a suicide attempt, according to a report.

The man, named Andy, was taken to Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chan Wan in serious condition, reported the Sun HK, a newspaper serving the Filipino community.

The publication said the 42-year-old, who was employed as a driver, was found by his girlfriend in the room they shared at a flat in Shau Kei Wan.

He was bleeding heavily, without his penis. Paramedics were later told the man had flushed it down the toilet.

Though what exactly prompted the self mutilation was not revealed, the Sun HK reported that initial investigations suggested the man was depressed and the police had classified the act as a suicide attempt, though no note was found.

A reporter from the outlet spoke to a neighbor, who said Andy had been upset for some time because his penis had begun to swell for unknown reasons.

His request for a woman to accompany him to the hospital to have it checked was rebuffed because she was embarrassed, the outlet added.
