I hope they keep up the good work in the 2nd season.

I have found this to be pretty cleverly done and some complex ethical issue seems to have been raised in each episode.

Although I like this a lot and hope they stop further production when they run out of ideas.

I watched the first season on Hulu, as I got a gift card for the site. I certainly wouldn't pay for their crumby selection myself. Even limited ads is so ridiculous that you can go and cook dinner, take a shit, walk the dog, clean the living room, and the ads are still running when you get back.

As I was saying, I watched the first season. Either I don't get the humor, or it's just a terrible show. I didn't care for it at all.

There are of cause a few good things.

but all in all. Totally wasted time, to fallow a serie like this.

Seriously, you're going to say this? And say you favor Red Dwarf over it? That show spent something like 3 series wandering around in an escape pod. When they were not in the escape pod, I did enjoy it, though not any more or less than The Orville.

Some apologist in the "trek universe" explained once that the Klingons did create different specie of Klingons for various periods in their history and various contacts with other races.

I think that is sophistry and poor story telling.

Dave, apparently there was some effort by the Star Trek: Enterprise producers to explain various aspects of the original series that are so altered in the Next Generation. In the original series episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles," Klingons were portrayed as burly redneck types with thick eyebrows. Little makeup and no appliance help. If I recall correctly (too lazy to get out the DVD's) a multi-part episode in Enterprise recounted some sort of genetic machinations to produce Klingon terrorists who could pass for human. Maybe?? Worff, as I recall, was asked about it once and said, "We don't speak of it."

Enterprise the series explained it as such. A virus was created from the DNA of the human Augments (think Khan Singh) and injected into several Klingons to create a more powerful, intelligent warrior. Problem was, it mutated and went airborne. This caused ridges to soften, etc., making the infected Klingon look human.

Just another point of blasphemy that the horrible idea of a series did...

The real point of all that story stupidness was that the original series and later version created different Klingons and after a point, the producers required an explanation -- so they invented the "virus" and the rather ridiculous explanations of why there appeared to be different species of Klingon.

I have long been of the impression that the originators of the first series simply cobbled together the stories and didn't bother to think about a seasonal arc or if there would be a second season.

The history of Star Trek is rampant with gossipy stories of why certain things happened. for instance, the legendary battle with Harlan Ellison.

The original story was the change in klingons was a direct effect from the tribbles Mr. Scott beamed into the klingon engine room, the first showing of a change was in "Star Trek the motion picture" at the beginning. Kaplaw!

Has anyone noticed the Trek stars popping up on The Orville?!

Robert Picardo (the Doctor from Voyager) has been in a few.

The latest episode had Marina Sirtis (Troi) as the kids' teacher.

Tony Todd also starred as a burly Moclon, angry about female babies being smuggled off-world.

And of course, Penny Johnson (Sisko's wife, Kassidy from DS9) is the doctor.

There are plenty of Trek alums behind the camera too though. Both Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes and Star Trek Voyager’s Robert Duncan McNeil are directing episodes of the series.

Yep Orville is pretty much TNG 2.0 (if Voyager was 1.5).

Not very impressed by the 2nd season though. Pretty much fast forwarded through the last 2 episodes (plus I really don't know what were they thinking with those 2 'girl power' episodes).

The comedy is nice but it's about time they also pulled some sci-fi muscles. The novelty is wearing off for me. As crappy as Discovery is, at least stuff happens over there an they aren't just re-hashing old ideas. Both shows could learn something from each other.

BTW Marina Sirtis voice-acted a character in Mass Effect who was a member of an all-female species. Now she's a teacher of an all-male species boy. Still rockin' it too.
