The Orville

Anyone seen this yet ?

Its a pretty funny spoof of Star Trek with a Seth Macfarlane touch.

I just saw the first twenty seconds of the first episode and I'm hooked.:D

the first episode is hilarious. after that it settles down into a more traditional star trek series with hope and exploration and boldly going as far as they can without actually being sued by star trek. episode 3 is very relevant to this board. it's about a female baby born to a race of all males and whether or not to give her a sex change so she'll fit in with the rest of her male society. i'm still enjoying immensely it even though it's not as funny as the first episode promised, moreso than star trek discovery anyway..

I tried the first episode and maybe I just wasn't in the right mood that night.

I'm going to give it a second try.

Just seen episode 3 over here in UK and if you don't watch any other episode then watch this one as it pretty relevant to some of the topics raised here.

I have watched the first Star Trek discovery but was surprised by the fact that the first episode ended in a cliffhanger I will add it to my "Watch List" as the daily dose of cookery programs and reality TV is starting to get through to me.🔨

I was a big Star Trek fan when I was younger so was looking forward to The Orville. I think the concept is good and they do a great job recreating the look and feel of TNG. Problem is they're playing it too safe with the comedy. I was expecting more of the raunchy humour found in MacFarlane's Family Guy Star Wars parodies. Also relying too heavily on traditional Trek stories and formulas. I'd agree that Episode 3 "About A Girl" was a well done and relatable social allegory. I wish they would do more deconstruction of sci-fi tropes, similar to what the Scream film series did with horror themes.

That said, I'm finding Star Trek Discovery to be an engaging and fascinating series so far. Haven't been this invested in the franchise since First Contact. Sonequa Martin Green brings a depth to her performance rarely found in past casts. And there is an urgency to the story telling that previous series would take several seasons to develop. I admire the ambitions of the showrunners, despite some questionable dramatic and stylistic choices. Unfortunately, the main crew hasn't yet proven very likable apart from Burnham, Saru, Sarek and Captain Giorgiou. I was dissapointed in the milestone first gay couple, who just seem snobby and flamboyant. I much preferred the portrayal of Orville's more masculine Bortus & Klyden.

One thing is for sure, it's a great time to be a Trekkie!

I am loving The Orville. I think the sci fi is being done very well and has had great stories so far. I think the humor is incindental to whatever is going on around them. Like there was a colony being attacked and someone says "There are families down there." Someone else says "I bet there are single people too."

I've hated Star Trek Discovery through the first four episodes. I've found it distasteful for a number of reasons, but I'll just mention it lacks any element of fun that is a trademark of Star Trek. From TOS through the movies there has always been an element of fun to them.

I really like the series so far. I'd say its about 80% Star Trek and 20% Humor. Not much more to say that hasn't already been said above.

My problem is that producers/writers are always upping the ante with Klingons. Their appearance becomes more extreme with each iteration. Does evolution work 1,000 times faster for Klingons?

Some apologist in the "trek universe" explained once that the Klingons did create different specie of Klingons for various periods in their history and various contacts with other races.

I think that is sophistry and poor story telling.

It is renewed for a second season and yes I do enjoy the series which is more of a comedy genre based of the orginal star Trek series.

Star Trek Discovery is entirely different and I also enjoy it as a loyal Star Trek fan as well.

It is really comparing apples to oranges as to which series is better.
