I grew up in a rural area. Early on, I accidentally touched an electric fence with my hand. I knew right then that I would never get any more sensitive part close to one.

My son, however... Once, when his citified Eastern cousin was visiting when they were both 10, convinced his cousin to try. We heard about the pain for days.

This is the same cousin that, while the entire family was at a Japanese restaurant and a large plate of sashimi (thin-sliced raw fish) was put on the kid’s table, son loudly exclaimed that the ball of green wasabi in the middle of the plate was the best part. He then moved his chopsticks as if to grab it. Cousin quickly grabbed the wasabi in his fingers and plopped it into his mouth. I never knew that a kid could hold as much water as he drank trying to get the burn out of his mouth....

My father taught the way to reduce the burn of over-spiced food was with milk or bread because they absorbed the hot oils. Water merely spread the "heat" over your entire mouth.

I once had a nephew who had a jalapeño eating contest with his wife. Neither of them are too bright and they ended up eating the peppers straight without much food and mostly beer. Well, I no know from him that not only does it burn going down but it burns coming out the next day.
