JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville man accidentally shot himself in the penis early Friday morning when he sat on a gun in the driver's seat of his car, police said.
Cedrick Jelks, 38, was taken to Memorial Hospital by 25-year-old Shanekia Roberts, who told police that Jelks was sitting in his Nissan Altima by himself and came into their home on Freedom Crossing Trail in a panic and ran straight to the bathroom.
She said she followed him and saw that he had a gunshot wound to his penis, so she took him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
She said Jelks told her he sat on the gun, which accidentally went off.
Investigators found that Jelks was convicted of cocaine possession in 2004.
It's possible he will be facing charges for possessing a firearm, because he is a convicted felon.

On a Facebook page I belong to, I wondered how long it would be before his friends started calling him "Stumpy."

I will never understand the reasoning that lets people mishandle guns in such destructive ways.

Well there these things called, one a safety, two a proper holster, and third which is most important know how to safely handle the thig before you take it out of the bleeding box. Though it's just me, if you have taken the weapon out like that and hiding it like that. Then something else was going on. Perhaps the right one got shot and not an innocent. Again just me.

Golly! It seems to me that I am the ONLY person who really understands this, it was the poor gun just defending itself as the big stupid ass sat upon it! Really, the gun had no choice! It had to defend itself! Gun lives matter!

A couple years after starting work, I bought about 3.75 acres and had a house built. For about 4 years, I was in a neighborhood of larger properties and families that had no children. So I could set up a nice 50 foot target range down the side of my house with an embankment as the backstop. I bought a wonderful Ruger Single Six with a six inch barrel and wasted many a 22-short plinking cans and targets. The Nearest house was 500 feet and safely west. One Saturday, my Father (and brother) was out and asked to see the gun. I think the last time my father handled a gun was WW2. This was 1980. The very first thing he did was to attempt to open it to see if it was loaded. Older guns break in the middle. The Ruger single six didn't... We had fun plinking a can or two and a dozen shots. . .
My brother, on the other hand, when he first took the gun, waved it around and pointed it up and pulled the trigger.
Neither my father or I ever got near my brother again when he had a gun. In fact, we promised each other to never be around him ever again if he had a gun.
What can I say?
I knew hunters at work that every year before small game and deer season, took the State of PA safety courses. Now remember, my work dealt with high pressure hydrogen and lots of dangerous equipment. We did more safety than most people even think about. And these men treated their guns the same way -- maintained properly, trained to be safe, and no safety measure is too "burdensome" to stay alive.
Please, don't sit on a loaded gun and shoot your dick like the man in the article.
Although, it would make a great fantasy story to remove a guy's dick and balls with a shotgun forcibly and not kill him. . .

Yeah, I'm always amazed by guys who dont control the direction their gun is pointing at all times. If anyone ever waves a gun around near me I'll immediately take them to task. There are definitely people I won't hunt with because they can't seem to hike and control their gun at the same time.
There is no such thing as an accidental shooting, there is only negligent shooting. Just because you didn't intend to shoot someone doesn't mean you're not responsible for doing so. There is no excuse to ever have a loaded weapon pointed in an unsafe direction and you should assume every gun is loaded. Really quite simple really.
