are there any significant changes besides the permanency between depo Lupron chemical castration and the real thing?

There's some disagreement about what causes the side effects profile of both. It's hard to separate the drug effects from the lack of testosterone's effects, the point of the drug. In general, it seems the prevailing view is it's really the lack of testosterone, which is the result of most of the castration methods.
