Independence Day: Resurgence

Cheesy dialog. Contrived and derivative plot. It's almost the same story as the original INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Lots of action, lots of destruction, lots of new anymore powerful alien weapons, lots of great CGI action.

It's a Popcorn matinee movie

I usually watch a movie twice before I compose a review but I had to wash my hair the other night, pick my toe-jam, change my socks, wash out the stinking undies... stuff like that so I haven't had the urge to postpone those tasks to watch it again.

That being said, it does keep your eyeballs thrilled. There is so much action that you don't get bored.

The Plot:

It's 20 years after the original INDEPENDENCE DAY when the aliens arrived and we defeated them.

In that time, the world has joined together and made alien weapons, earth defenses, yada, yada, yada, and it turns out that the original aliens had just started drilling onto the earth's metallic core to steal it and use it in building more spaceships.

Cliche -- the clock ticks down to the destruction of earth's core...

So this bigger and better alien ship shows up that is 3000 miles across and spans the Atlantic Ocean.

All sorts of characters 20 years older show up and reprise their roles -- new heroes show up to mouth the nearly the same dialog as their old heroes.

Earth cities get destroyed.

Drunks on a fishing trawler show up.

Big battles of flying saucers,

The mothership is invaded.

The queen of the aliens is revealed.

She tries to eat a school bus full of kids...

And then we win. spoiler alert. INDEPENDENCE DAY 3 will not show mankind in exile in outer space.

Grab the popcorn, the beer, the soda, and watch the action but don't think too much.

It is eyeball candy.

oops, sorry. I was being sarcastic about the ending of #2. I'm not clairvoyant so I don't know.

Obviously the aliens can't win -- that's always been the trouble with "alien invasion" movies. The aliens don't win.

It's like disaster movies - the hero or heroine never dies.

That new movie coming out - LIFE - about the strange new Martian life form that starts to eat everyone on the space station - Sight unseen I can guarantee you that the Martian creature will never reach earth.

All the excitement and all the grand schemes of alien races to conquer the earth always fail. The only reason that those movies are fun to watch is all the action and all the bombs and all the funky weapons -- but the best parts are -- wit and good scripts.
