Tonight's semi-sophisticated offering of classical craziness

Post by Dave (imported) »

John Ferrante, a counter-tenor, teamed up with Peter Schickele to perform PDQ Bach's magnificent cantata --

Iphigenia in Brooklyn.

John Ferrante is a counter-tenor. That's a male who sings in the female soprano range as opposed to the bargain-basement counter tenor who is just another contralto. There are a few men out there who can sing in the soprano range and still have their testicles working.

Iphigenia in Brooklyn is a stunning masterpiece of the baroque music. Although, since PDQ claims to have written it, I suspect that not much of it is original.

(I rolled my eyes at one of those last two sentences)

I should tell the unsuspecting that several times in the piece, bare bassoon reeds are played without being attached to the bassoon and in other places, the trumpeters forsake the trumpets and play only the mouthpieces.

One last warning -- do not drink or get liquids near your computer as you listen.
