Hidden Figures

Post by Arab Nights (imported) »

I really enjoyed this movie. This is the second time in my life when a theater has broken out in applause. In this case it was when Kevin Costner's character took a sledge hammer to the "Colored Women Bathroom" sign and announced that everyone at NASA had the same skin color. It also captured the sense that I remember of a period when the United States was outward looking and ready to take on the unknown.

"Hidden Figures" is the best movie that I have seen for years! I encourage everyone to go see this movie. Why it took this long to tell this story blows my mind. I can't think of one thing that I didn't enjoy about it. I was so filled with pride and emotion at the end that I was speechless..

I don't remember the title. One of those boring operatic themed things that only Dave and hundreds of thousands of other people could possibly enjoy.

According to IMDB:

HIDDEN FIGURES:

Based on a true story. A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program's first successful space missions.

I came back to this thread because I've watched HIDDEN FIGURES twice so far and both times it was a good and heartwarming experience.

It is the story of three women who by their brains, their hard work, and their dedication to becoming better did wonderful things.

They worked as "Computers" which before IBM and before Univac, and before laptops and desktops and thumb drives... They sat with Friden machines and did thousands of calculations on a daily basis.

One Lady is a mathematical genius who held her own in the early 1960's against brilliant men and helped calculate spaceflight trajectories -- not an easy task.

Another Lady is also a computer, but she has the foresight to schedule work and when the IBM mainframe was being installed (not an easy task) taught her band of "computers" Fortran and led them to new and productive jobs.

The third lady became the first African American Aeronautical Engineer at NASA and in the USA. And she sweet-talked a judge into letting her attend an "All-white" school for the courses.

So if you get a chance, see this movie. Arab Nights was right -- you will feel good. You will like these ladies and you will be happy at the end.

I'm bumping this up because of today's news...

Think back to the scene where Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) has just finished a first set of calculations and she is in the bosses office with them examining the numbers. They ask how she knew certain "top secret" numbers and she says - "I held it up to the light" and when the boss does that, the black magic marker used to black out the "top secrets" wasn't dark enough and the typing showed through...

Well, TODAY, I was reminded of that scene by the real news (forbidden news) - -

but the takeaway is twofold:

a) people are really that stupid about black magic markers...

b) HIDDEN FIGURES is still a good movie to watch (even a couple times).

LOL! Strangely, both cases of marker mismanagement are for the good of the country :)
