It's got lots of action and it's set in the new star trek universe.
The new Captain Kirk is getting bored of the 5-year mission to create modern versions of old star trek stories and characters.
The new Spock gets word that the old Spock has died.
Lots of ennui ensues from these two plot points.
So when the Enterprise visits the farthest known outpost of humanity -- a space station that looks like a world and houses millions... They visit a nebula filled with rocks, suddenly they are attacked and stranded on a bizarre world. It's an exciting attack.
It's an equally exciting escape from that world in a really, really, really old starship chasing someone determined to destroy and kill millions and it's a great Star Trek chase and fight.
The ravaging hoard of bad aliens is defeated by (wait for it) (wait for it) very noisy 20th century music ... Deus Ex Machina.
Kirk stops the destruction (Who else?)...
Kirk and Spock bond and end their male ennui.
In the realm of Star Trek -- entirely enjoyable - bring popcorn, tacos, beer, and friends. Mockery and sarcasm make it better.

I guess I'm getting old and cynical and impossible to please.
I watched it. Once. I hated it.

OK.
BTW - Star Trek VOYAGER is on BBC-America Channel and It's just plain awful -- or perhaps I would say Offal.

The story is excellent, Justin Lin's direction is splendid, the cast is brilliant, the cinematography is stunning, and the visual effects are outstanding.
