Chinese (?) general who castrated himself for the Emperor

Someone please advise on something I read some years back. It concerns a story about a Chinese general who was given the keys to the Emperor's harem, while the Emperor went on a journey. The general was given strict orders---on pain of death--not to take advantage of any of the Emperor's concubines while he was away.

The general knew that the Emperor was an extremely suspicious person, and pondered what to do if the Emperor was to accuse him of violating his trust.

Sure enough---when the Imperial Majesty returned to his palace, he immediately accused the general of having taken liberties with several of the Emperor's women.

The general told the Emperor that he was innocent, and there was no way he violated any of the Imperial concubines. As proof, he told the Emperor to look in his saddlebag. When the Emperor opened the bag, there inside was the general's penis. He had cut it off and placed it there just prior to the Emperor's departure.

The Emperor was so overjoyed that he granted the general large estates, and made him Chief Eunuch, and the general became known as the Chinese god of eunuchs.

I was wondering if this story was true, and if anyone else recalls having read it.
