Calcium Supplements

Post by cpecke (imported) »

Hello everyone. After being on Androcur since April of 2002, I have a tentative date set up for mid February for surgical castration. I've been reading the posts here and doing some research on osteoperosis and calcium supplements. I am going to begin taking calcium supplements very soon. Before I buy any though I thought I'd ask people here about their personal preferences for calcium supplements. I've read about calcium carbonate which seems to cause constipation in some people and is not absorbed as well as calcium citrate. Then there's a brand called Tri-Boron which has both citrate and carbonate in it. I'm leaning towards a brand called Citrical. Citrical itself doesn't have magnesium in it while Citrical Plus does have magenesium with it. However, I've read that it should be a 2/1 ratio of calcium to magenesium but but Citrical Plus is more along the lines of 3/1.

I'm curious about what other people who are eunuchs prefer to use for calcium and other vitamin supplements.

Thanks,

Chris

I've done a lot of research, and right now I am quite happy with my current schedule, which is...

1) Two tablets of a generic Calcium Citrate + Vitamin D every morning just after breakfast. It provides 630 MG of Calcium and 400 I.U of Vitamin D.

2) Two tablets of a generic Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc just after supper. Also a multi-vitamin and minerals tablet that provides another 400 I.U of Vitamin D.

3) Another two tablets of that generic Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc at bedtime to carry me through the night, and providing over 100% RDA of Calcium and Zinc, and over 1,500 MG of Calcium per day.

Thanks for the information Andrew. We're going to Walgreens today and pick up some Citrical Plus and start out with that for the time being and possibly some magnesium supplements as well. That should be fine for now. I consume a lot of milk on a daily basis (1/2 gallon minimum) so I get a lot of calcim from that

but I do want to get started on a supplement also. I have read that a person can get way too much calcium also so I'm not going to go over board. The best thing for me to do will go to my family physician after things get healed up and get his input.

Thanks again for the information,

Chris

you should also get a bone scan, you can wait tell after the surgery but it is something you must do.
