Castration Preference - General anesthesia (asleep) or Local anesthesia (awake)

Post by smoothie36 (imported) »

For years castrations by Drs. Specter & Kimmel were performed using local anesthesia. Now, general anesthesia seems to be more common for Docters doing castrations, of course there are exceptions. My castration was performed under general anesthesia although I preferred and requested local anesthesia, but that was not an available option. I was also told that males arranging for castration normally preferred general anesthesia. Not being convinced, I ask members here, whether a eunuch or not, to tell me their desired choice of castration anesthesia - General or Local? All responses are welcome even if only one word, or many words giving the rationale for their choice. Your reply is much appreciated.

Local. When given a choice local is preferred. Even in a minor surgery general anesthesia has an established rate of mortality that should be avoided. If the patient has troubling anxiety suitable calming medication can be used. --FLO--

General, as was I done in a hospital and given no choice, I had a tumor in the left one that was obvious in the scans and something wrong with the right but they couldn't tell before opening me up. I am sure it just makes life easier for them as the surgeon can then chat with the oncologist and lab assistant can take it away get some results which all takes time and not have to worry about you freaking out listening to "my God, would you look at the state of that, he wont see Christmas," that kind of thing.

I had an incompetent local so I felt a lot of the cutting. Enough about me and I must agree with Uncle Flo that a local carries a lot less risk than a general. As we used to say in the hospital "Anyone can put a patient to sleep but it takes an anesthesiologist to wake them back up". The longer you are under the higher the risk of death.

I'd say local - less possible complications (given it is done right). And probably would end up cheaper.

I had all general for all of the orchiopexy and orchiectomy surgeries

Local for the scrotum reduction.

Spinal is a common one now. I am not a fan. They tried it on me for the last orchiectomy. It did not work.

I had a local for the castration, and a general (3 1/2 hours) for the penectomy.

I would prefer Local.

I preferred local, and my orchiectomy was with local. I enjoyed watching much of the procedure.
