Is one's insurance going to cover one's hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if this person voluntarily got surgically castrated?

Any thoughts on this?

I'd say probably. The doctor you go see for it wants to get paid, they're going to figure a way to code it in the paperwork so it's covered.

Thank you very much for your answer here! :)

Mine is covering it. My copay for Androgel is $30/month.

Also, though, is a doctor always going to be able to successfully code HRT in the paperwork? After all, this one non-castrated man whose body needs testosterone HRT due to reduced testosterone as a result of aging told me that his insurance stopped paying for his HRT in spite of the fact that he had a doctor's prescription for it. :(

Also, out of curiosity--did you need to tell your insurance company the reason that you got surgically castrated?

In the old days insurance didn't cover self harm like suicide attempts and such. This was to protect from people who would try to kill themselves specifically to get life insurance for their family. But most have come around and will cover self harm.

I think your budget battle will be that they are starting to do less and less coverage of hrt generally. This is because people were abusing hormones and also more people were claiming they needed it due to menopause. It is still controversial in medical community whether hrt is a good thing or bad... There is fair bit of evidence it increases cancer risk.

So I would start with finding out if your insurance covers hrt generally since many don't.

But if they do it probably matters how you present. Like if you're diagnosed with gender identity or body dysmorphic disorders you should be covered. If you present as a crazy self harming person you should be covered.

Lastly if you simply damage your balls with calcium chloride without any explanation they wouldn't be able to prove it was voluntary and then they'd have to treat it appropriately.

Just keep in mind that hrt isn't the only medical treatment for androgen deficiency. They might just give you something to stave off osteoporosis and anti depressants.

OK, and good. :)

Is this true for transgender people as well, though?

How exactly, though?

Does having no sex hormones reduce cancer risk, though?

What about if I will present as a eunuch who is happy and proud of achieving "bullet-proof" sterilization and who desires a much more feminine appearance (with or without estrogen replacement therapy), though?

I myself am certainly not big on self-harm attempts, though. :(

Such as what, exactly? Also, in addition to this, would this treatment increase my sex drive?

Any thoughts on this?
