The Walking Dead -- season 6

The second half the season six -- THE WALKING DEAD episode 9 is amazing.

No one is safe. Major characters die in this show. It an exciting battle for the city.

There's a lack of fire. There's a bazooka.

And it's Michonne's (Danai Gurira) birthday.

Daryl's RPG scene was jaw-dropping enough, but Rick's ragtag group at night scene ... I couldn't believe how quickly that fell apart. **SPOILERS AFTER THIS**

I felt as frustrated as Rick having to just stand there and watch it all happen ... which is why I think I would have tried to slowly pick up the recalcitrant kid, put my hand around his mouth and keep going before any walkers got curious. But, I get it, this is TWD, and things are meant to spiral out of control. Honestly, though - and I've been watching TWD long enough to know better - I didn't expect them to take out a kid on camera. I don't think they've ever done that before. Call me old-fashioned. But then I never expected the mother and Ron to go as well. Wiped out the whole damn family. Well, crap. Now that was a scene I won't soon forget. (But Ron, at least, had it coming.)

I did not know the thing with Carl was coming until last week, when DarkHorizons.net spoiled something about what happens in the graphic novel. I think maybe knowing that in advance saved me from unhinging my jaw altogether. If there's one thing TWD can do well, it's make my mouth fall open in shock.

I had read something a year or so ago about where the graphic novels were in comparison to the show and they mentioned half of Carl's face being gone in the books. I was wondering if they were going to do that or not so it wasn't that much of a surprise. I saw something the other day about Norman Reedus wanting off the show at the end of the year and of course Daryl is not in the books at all. He's just someone they made up for the show who became insanely popular. I am wondering though if the show could survive without him more than one additional year.

Thursday or Friday I thought about not setting aside Sunday night to The Walking Dead. I changed my mind because a few friends and I text back and forth during the commercials and The TALKING Dead is such a pile of silly fun to decompress the episode. Like is said - I changed my mind.

My Niece's son has the graphic novels, all of them I think, and he confirmed last year when season six started about Carl. Apparently Carl in the graphic novels wears a {spoiler deleted}... The TV show telegraphed the act and even had Rick try to teach that kid how to shoot. Who would have thought a drunken-ass raised kids who were just as dumb and vengeful.

Rick also lost a hand in the graphic novels. I don't know if that will happen on the TV show.

The reason everyone is waiting with anxious and bated breath for Negan to appear is that he kills one of our favorite characters in the graphic novel, and it isn't a nice, neat death. It's messy and rotten and ugly and all sorts of mean and nasty... {just google it, if you want}...

I didn't expect Michonne to do what she did. I didn't expect the new love interest (the mother) to panic and fall.

The last time I felt that dread and horror was when Sophia walked out of the barn. (you know what I'm talking about)...

This was on that level of shock.

When TWD wants to break your heart or wants to destroy all hope, they do.

And they do it in the most brutal ways.

BTW - did you notice that Carol shot the "W" to death and Morgan killed him when he returned a zombie. Talk about meanings...

And Carol's little "lecture" to Ron, the kid who just couldn't handle it all.

And remember Carol's touching scene at the Church with Lizzie?

What struck me is that no one but we will ever know that Carol is responsible for scaring that poor kid to death. If it weren't for her insensitive stories, he may not have panicked. Of course, I understand why she spoke to him that way. It was a progression of events ... and she's now desensitizing herself to the affection of children. It's all so sad.

Remember that she is an abused wife and that Sophia was her child. She was also the person at the jail that taught the children how to fight the zombies and gave them knives and other weapons.

And yes, no one knows of that conversation between them.

This is one of those rare TV hours that looks and feels like Shakespearean acting at its best. There are five female characters and one minor male character but it is those five women that create the drama and the story.

It pretty much stands on its own. So don't worry about knowing lots of previous story. About the only detail needed is that Abraham, Sascha, and Daryl blew up six "saviors" in a previous episode with a rocket launcher.

If you get the chance, watch this. It is rare for any show to create an story let alone a single episode this outstanding.

I've had people ask why I watch such a bloody and violent show.

This episode is the main reason. There's not many shows that do true dramatic writing and put it on the screen. This episode is like one of those tight, three person stage plays that everybody wants sees. The real truth is that without the zombie apocalypse, these three women -- Paula, Carol, Maggie would be trading cute cat videos in there emails or facebooks. But this is the zombie apocalypse and they are here, damaged, desperately trying to stay alive, with the world in ruins around them.

Who are the walking dead? The zombies? The humans struggling to survive? Or the rest of us -- the reader who might still be trading kitty-cat videos and puppy videos, and silliness online?
