I have tickets to see THE MARTIAN (the movie version and not the book) tomorrow.
Yes, it has Matt Damon and yes, Matt Damon is a jerk (sometimes) but that won't stop me from seeing the movie.
Best joke I've heard all week -- MARS has more water than California. After NASA's Monday press conference.
Best line (already seen in the previews) from THE MARTIAN -- "I've got to science the shit out of this."

Re: Three Books- The Martian, Seveneves, When Worlds Colide
THE MARTIAN is a really fun movie. It isn't a comedy but it is quite funny, laugh out loud funny.
And it is exciting the way it should be exciting.
As the previews and the promo's all tell us -- Mark Watley (Matt Damon) is left behind for dead on Mars when a windstorm threatens the Mars expedition. How he survives over a year alone on Mars and how he gets back to earth is the story.
Most of the science is Mark Watley surviving with some really neat things. . . He criticizes himself in the video logs.
Some science is (after all) rocket science but the movie isn't lost in the science. The exposition of why and what Watley and NASA do are kept straightforward.
At one point Watley says that he loves what he does and he is good at it. That is the point of it all.
So go see it and enjoy it.
Book Quote #1: NASA, however, is absolutely shitting itself [...] To them, equipment failure is terrifying. To me, it's "Tuesday."
