The Casual Vacancy (A miniseries)

Post by Dave (imported) »

In a quiet country town of Pagford in the English Countryside, Barry Fairbrother dies and leaves "A Casual Vacancy" on the Parish Council.

Thus begins a full-scale, spot on war for Barry Fairbrother's seat on the Parish Council, a very civilized and quite indecent war of teacher against student, parent against child, rich against poor, and gossips against gossips.

And a ghost that posts on the internet.

This, as they say, is British Class Warfare laid bare in all its seedy glory!

Three episodes and that's it for Pagford - - sic transit gloria mundi

Sordid fun

You know I don't think I have ever seen a British comedy that I did not like, they know how to do it with stile. As Mrs Slocombe says she must get right home to take care of her pussy. I just looked up that cast and only one is still alive today. What is great about that show is its still funny today.

Lets face it, the Brits know how to do comedy.

This has that wonderful facade of British boredom until you look closer and start seeing the seedy and gossipy in life.

The hand-job in the library had me almost in hysterical laughter last night.

That and a few other strange wanderings like a floating television and the dinner party from HELL or the election brochures in the funeral program.

The most strange thoughts just occurred to me as I watched episode three (the last episode).

One of my Cousins - - Vittorio -- if you must know -- who was on a School Board when they had a bad teacher's strike.

A few members of the School Board wanted to disband the Teacher's Union and walked out of a board meeting.

That day they settled the contract and unfortunately Cousin Vittorio died of a heart attack.

On the day before his funeral, the "walkout" members of the School Board rescinded the contract and voted pay cuts for everyone.

It produced was one of the longest teachers strikes in Pennsylvania history.

So a "casual vacancy" caused by death creates many problems. It has happened before, in recent history, in the six degrees of Kevin Bacon type circles, . . .

Now you know how much strife a "casual vacancy" can cause.
