The hell did they do? Roll the cath around in a hog pen for an hour, then put it in and leave it in for a month or more?!
In Romania there are major problems with in-hospital infections, with superbugs (a strain of bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotic drug). There has been a huge scandal related to disinfectants. They were so diluted that sometimes disinfectants even contained the bacteria they were supposed to kill! The scandal has passed, nothing has changed. It is a country drowned by corruption and incompetence. You can go into a hospital for a routine check-up and get infected with a deadly thing. It's safer not to go at all. Especially for surgery.

I dunno, though, $350k USD , tax free, would be pretty tempting.
To put things in perspective, the average wage in the country is ~ $ 700 / month, or $ 8400 per year. But most receive the minimum wage, which is $ 300 per month, or $ 3600 a year. The person in the article, if he was a military, is likely to receive about $ 1,000 a month, or $ 12,000 per year. I think that under these conditions that amount of $ 350,000 sound differently. But in Europe, courts rarely decide to award more than a few thousand euros (the euro is almost equivalent to the dollar) in reparation.
