German book on the Skoptzy

Post by JesusA (imported) »

A colleague who is writing an article on eunuch physiology sent me an Internet link to a small German book on the Russian-Romanian Skoptzy yesterday. The book is Über die russisch-rumänische Kastratensekte de Skopzen, by Walter Koch (Jena: Verlag von Gustav Fischer, 1921). Koch gives background information and physiological measurements for 10 Skoptzy, ranging in age at time of measurement from 50 to 94 years old. They were castrated at ages ranging from 9 to 26. The original had plates showing photographs of each of the ten, through two plates were missing from the copy that was scanned.

The book is available for free at http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/011157558

My colleague is a Chinese-Indonesian whose German is even weaker than mine. (I had one semester of German in college in 1961 before switching to Japanese!) Any help with translation would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps Paolo would like something to do when he tells me he has seen all the internet he cares to see. Just saying....

Interesting. The photos it appears they didn't quite completely nullify these men, with many retaining their scrotums, and there was one in there that appeared to have only had the initial "seal" as his penis was still there, but his balls were clearly gone.

Thanks Jesus....It appears that they had been penectomized as well as castrated in all the photos except one..He seemed to have a penis...Amazing how they all had pronounced hips and underdeveloped shoulders...Did you notice how many times the book had been taken out, and the last entry date? two takers from 1925 to 1945...the last date of withdrawal..Wow..busy..hehe Thanks again Jackie
