Cleaning the Pantry
Cleaning the Pantry
I was cleaning out old, out-dated canned and jar goods in the pantry cupboard this afternoon. Found an old can, corroded, drying out. It was an old can of fish assholes. I suspect they've been there for at least 10 years. Don't believe me? I can send you a pic of the can/label!
What's in your cupboard?

I used to have a shelf of cans of fish assholes but they are gone now, the kids probably ate them. --FLO--

I used to make sales calls on area restaurants asking if they would like to carry and use my product, then hand them a can. One called my bluff and offered to cook them up and share them with me...

I found a leaking can of green beans in my stash. It was a 2013 date. I have 2012 stuff that's still good.
I do have a lot of canned veggies and bags of dried mushrooms.
I like to keep a back stock of stuff.

I found a jar of Ragu sauce that dated to 2001... There was stuff left over from my coffee shop - that closed in 2003. Only the can of fish assholes was in bad shape, though.

Re: Cleaning the Pantry
Not in my pantry, but when I was in college, somebody left a Tupperware with three cookies. Finally somebody noticed, but green fuzz was already growing. The answer was simple. Pour in the small dribbles of soda left in your can, replace lid, repeat, replace lid, repeat, replace lid, repeat and so on. After a while we had the world's oldest cookie. Or at least it looked like it.

Re: Cleaning the Pantry
A jar of mazola oil is sitting under my range top for over ten years now. I am afraid to to open it.
My Aunt once opened a can of spoiled can of tomato paste once. That damn stuff hit the ceiling at 11 feet off the ground and you know tomato stains permanently. So my ceiling has spots. (think British)
i had a friend who described going to his Mother-in-law's cookout and discovering the mayonnaise slathered over his hamburger was 5 years out of date. Apparently, it didn't hurt him.
My Nephew and his wife had a jalapeño eating contest one weekend and should I even describe he was still hurting a week later. That wasn't spoiled food and it is off topic but it still is funny.
The oldest thing I have in my pantry is either brown sugar (I think that's what that small brick is) or pastina in a glass jar, waiting for use (think Wedding Soup) . . .

Re: Cleaning the Pantry
You know I try to stay away from canned anything, so the number of can items in my pantry is very small, the oldest are the Sardines at several months, even the stuff in the frig and freezer are not that old, I don't really stockpile like I did when I had kids in the house. Now days I keep a really tight ship as it were. Then again I try to eat fresh as much as possible and when fresh spoils you know it.

If the fresh is spoiled, it's not longer fresh. Right?
