I must say that this news story took me by surprise. I had always though of Bruce Jenner as such a total stud. We'er talking about a man's man. A god amongst men. And now we're told he's going to have it all cut off and become a women. What's the world coming to?

Yes, I was so shocked by this news! I've also been shocked that at night it's dark, water is wet, and McDonald's coffee is hot.

Re: Bruce Jenner Transitioning to a Woman
This news item, "Bruce Jenner transitioning..." did not really surprise me, but it did sadden me a little bit. I am always saddened when I find out some OLDER man is transitioning, because I KNOW, and we all KNOW that someone who transitions in the early years, in their teens maybe, they MIGHT have good results and live well in their chosen gender, but for OLD men, anyone past 25, the results are never going to be good and we all know this is true. Please don't get me wrong on this, I am not in any way against any transgender person making the switch to their own chosen gender, but I do wish there were better ways for young people to find out when they are young that they might want to consider the change, rather than finding out when they are old , when they have already lived most of their lives in the wrong gender, and old people who will never really look natural and real in their chosen gender.
Look at the heart wrenching case of Kris/Kristen Beck, a retired Navy Seal, Senior Chief, father of two, and NOW he becomes a she, I sincerely wish her the very best of luck, but I imagine there will be many very difficult if not insurmountable obstacles in her way. At her age, the testosterone has made many irreversible changes to her bones, her masculine jaw-line, he rib cage and shoulder width, clearly masculine and damn near impossible to alter with even the most costly surgery. I honestly feel so sorry that this brave person has chosen this late point in her life to make the transition, I imagine it will be "fraught with maladies and misfortunes." Bruce Jenner is even older, all those years he lived as a male when she should have been female, and now her body is old, masculinized and even after spending staggering amounts of money, enduring numerous surgeries and painful lengthy recoveries, she will never really appear naturally female. Again, I sincerely wish this person the best of luck and every success in her transition, she is going to need all the luck she can get.

I disagree..I'm 69 and going through a change......I plan on an orchiectomy..not total surgery..I'm just too old for that, I think.I met, a month ago, a woman, 84 years of age, dressed nicely, who had surgery at 74, and is now 10 years into her female form..She's beautiful...That ex-Navy , Kristen Beck seems wonderfully adapted...She may not be the most femme of women, but I think she's very attractive...I'm sure I d/won't look as pretty as my two examples, but I'll just do the best I can.. It's the best I can do, and good enough for me.Thanks Jackie
Re: Bruce Jenner Transitioning to a Woman
Deacon, what you say is true for some. But for others I suspect it may not be as tough as one imagines. One of our members here (she'll likely hit me for referring to her as senior) has made an exceptional transition, doing it very well. Over the years I have met literally several hundred transitioning people of all ages, both sides of the coin. Some do very well, others not so much. But they all at least are doing it and living what they need to live, difficult as that sometimes is. Like you, I can only wish them well. A friend comes to mind (2 actually) - both FtM. One is now a beefy, bald, bearded man of 60, that one would never guess; the other is a man of about 30 that when I met him I would never have known either - definitely hot, and I hit on him - he let me down easy! I know one woman who transitioned at 70 - Barbara has an amazing presence and dignity, despite the difficulty of her transition. She is now 83 and having the time of her life!

For the sake of preparing an appropriate response, I will assume the rumors about Bruce Jenner transitioning are true. There is mounting evidence they are. The NY Times reported that his mother said she was more proud of him now than when he won his gold medal. Self-disclosure: I am a successfully transitioned trans women. I may be a bit more blunt than usual because I don't have much time to write. [I may or may not be the senior member Kristoff mentions, below.

I hope the world is coming to a greater acceptance of diversity. Apparently, Bruce is documenting his transition for a TV show. The Times also reported he will be interviewed by Diane Sawyer. This may turn out to be a good education for a lot of

Well, I say welcome to Team Girl Bruce!

Deacon, anyone transitioning from male to female after puberty is well under way may
Thank you, Kristoff, for your right on observations!
I, too, know Barbara. She is an inspiration and an effective advocate.
Although I've been told I'm fortunate that I pass well, I would never say I pass 100% of the time, but I truly do not care. I am who I was born to be and in that way, more than any other, I am blessed.

Re: Bruce Jenner Transitioning to a Woman
I wonder as I often do, usually into trouble!
It just occurred to me reading the responses here about mature transitions, let alone transition at any age the enormity that people face with Family, Friends work, daily life! Let alone being right out there in the public eye with the media etc etc etc.
For anyone to be so brave, no doubt in fear and trembling to face the media and their fans is way out there in the courage stakes and I wonder how many of us, if in that position would have the cojones to do it. In all the insecurity about how we feel, look pass etc.
I think others here have stated it better than I can. But here is my attempt: It is about being, about being connected to the essence of your being and living it to the full and just blossoming in that. It may be a disillusionment to the pin up memories of yester year, and let's face it none of us other than our Kristoff look the same as we did 20 years ago! This is a journey and one of change small and great and something to be embraced and lived to the full.
So good luck to all the brave souls that dare to step out and put their own flag on the moon and declare their own great step for humanity. Personally I find it humbling to be in the shadow of such brave people.
