Re: Pele is awake
Yes there are some good photos of that stack of tires burning and today when I was in that area the smoke was really bad most likely from those burning tires. Air quality was not good today in Pahoa, although the other side of town up wind from the flow it was just fine. It looks like tomorrow evening the town of Pahoa will be cut in half, they closed the K-6 school today, its right in the path of the flow.
Ernie of Maine - I always have fun, this is very interesting living here, the lava flow is way far away from me so I am not in any danger. the only thing is that after it cuts the main highway in half then it will just take longer to get to ............ and oh well.
Surfing, after that last big blow went by the surfers were out in droves catching that wave. My neighbor and I went down to watch.
Aloha

That was Lava Surfing, not ocean surfing ! Really.
Meanwhile.
Hawaii will let homeowners watch lava slowly destroy their own houses
Well isn't that special. http://theweek.com/article/index/270841 ... own-houses
Aloha Oy :shakemitk
Is it true Hawai'ians are one of the Lost Tribes of Israel ?

Re: Pele is awake
No moi, I think you have been smoking way to much to come to that conclusion.
The Lava is what it is, meaning that sometime in the next day or so it will cross the road, cutting the town of Pahoa in half. Then in a week it will cross the highway cutting lower Puna off from the rest of the world, except for the two roads that they have already built and not counting the third one there working on which goes the other direction.
Life is so bad here that Napa is opening a new store just south of the flow (my side of the flow) in the once beautiful town of Pahoa which will still be beautiful after Pele flows through it.
I must say I have spent my food budget for the next month already stocking up because we really don't know what this flow is going to do other then move very very
V E R Y S L O W.
How slow is it you say? have you ever watched paint dry? or a turtle race? its like that only slower. At an average speed of 10 yards an hour, that's 30 feet, or 9.144 meters for those of you who don't understand the very clear inches, feet, yards base 12 system not like that base 10 you use. At the very least when they decided to go with that base 10 system they could have at least started with a yard and made it a meter and then went from there but NO that would have made sense. Actually they calculated the radius of the earth and did it wrong I might add or was it around the middle, but the earth is not really totally round but then again they were using PI, or 3.1415927 or there about (no wonder they screwed that up). Anyway back to the lave which is moving very very slow Moi could roll a joint smoke it standing there just a couple feet away or 0.60960m because its only moving 2 inches a minute or .050800m if your inclined that way.
Now for the benefit of the rest of you and our good friend MOI, I hope that made sense,
Just my 2 cents worth.
gotcha

Re: Pele is awake
Pele stopped, has not moved in the last couple days, that does not mean she is not still flowing, she is, she is building up for ................
There have been some breakouts higher up on the flow,
I see we are finally getting national attention on some news services.
Stay tuned, keep watching,

Re: Pele is awake
As soon as the lava crossed the road (boy that sounds like a joke "Why did the lava cross the road?" . . ).
When the lava burnt the road and approached houses then the national news decided to took notice.
! ! ! ! oooh - fire pretty. . . destruction better. . . victims who can cry on the news, wonderful! ! ! ! !
Plus some of the Big Island News Video feed made it to the nightly news.
It does seem that Kilauea or Puʻu ʻŌʻō has slowed the rate of lava flowing from the crater. A big chunk of crust at the crater's edge collapsed and caused all sorts of bright red sparkly fireworks not too long ago. Maybe this portion of the eruption is stopping. The only problem with that is that the lava in the lava tube is still red hot. So unless it solidifies to room temperature and plug the entire lava tube then it can break out once again. Lava tubes are rather good insulators. Just look at the Nov 1st morning video with the cattle ranchers chasing cattle near the exposed gray pillows of the lava flow.
(and the punchline would be -- "It had this burning desire to get to the other side!")

Re: Pele is awake
Dave I love it and will pass it on.
Two people were arrested for trespassing, this will cost them a couple grand or jail time or better yet, both.
There has been no looting so don't believe social media where nothing needs to be verified.
The lava has stalled, this does not mean its stopped. It is breaking out above the leading edge both north and south of its main flow. Only time will tell when and if it decides to continue through the little village of Pahoa.
Aloha

It hasn't stalled, it's regrouping and planning to attack from two sides.

They are the subject of one of the news conferences. What they did was to trespass on someone else's property that was vacated because of the threat of being overrun by lava. It's like a real stupid thing to do for a couple pictures. Or the other case is to walk or drive past a police or National Guard checkpoint. That's a case of a "major league stupid" also.
It is prudent and common sense to get away from something as dangerous as lava. In this case the Police and the Civil Defense director (I think that's Daniel Oliverio) is one of the most honest and forthright civil servants I've ever seen. He's sincere, compassionate, and comforting to people who are going to have lots of dumb trouble.
He doesn't need trespassers fooling around for a picture.
