Re: treatment for depression
I wish you well.
Being drunk through life ruins living.
I'm not against libations for celebrations; but some folks can't get enough, and should curtail usage.
Get the will-power to 'save it' for special occasions.
Believe you are worth the effort.
Talk with someone, or join a group.
Good luck.

Re: treatment for depression
Thoughts to all who might see this;
Many people use alcohol as an excuse to 'cover', or mask what they don't like - or want others to see about themselves.
Everyone knows 'that guy' who gropes or 'hits on' other guys at parties, gets falling-down drunk and gets naked, or allows other guys to 'take advantage of him'.
I have dealt with many young men (and a few young women) over the years who were incarcerated for drinking. Almost all have the same 'reasons' for staying drunk.
They couldn't bring themselves to admit who (or what) they are, and they almost ALWAYS had a 'sexual' component to their 'problem';
sexual orientation
dick or no dick -- the boys didn't think they 'measured up, the girls wanted to own one (most were ignorant of averages too)
physical appearance
body issues
family issues (religious upbringing/class/status), or fear of loosing wealth/inheritance {To be honest, I always thought those were lazy spoiled brats}
In boys, these issues equate to sexual attraction (some girls too).
They didn't feel worth. Who would 'like' them as they are?
Most couldn't believe their parents wouldn't still love them if they were to 'just be themselves'.
If your family (or friends) can't 'love you' or like you as your 'real self'; then you haven't "lost" anything.
You never had it in the first place.
Is there any point in trying to please them?
The last thing you need is to loose your life for someone who could care less if you lived or not.
Love has no boundaries.
If your family can forgive your drunkenness, and even enable it, then surely they will 'forgive' you for being your 'true self'. You might be surprised at what they already 'know'.
Admit who or what you are. Get help. Stop depending on substances for a 'crutch' or excuse.
There are SO many 'groups' who WILL accept you as you are. This web-site is a prime example.
You are not alone. You are not the only one with problems, or your particular problem.
When you can be yourself, your life will automatically change for the better.
There are no limits to your life when you are happy.

Re: treatment for depression
Carbohydrate abstinence really raises my mood.
It takes a week to ten days to kick in but, once it does -
zippy high energy and happier for no good reason in a universe not of my choosing.
There will be a withdrawal syndrome day 2 to 7 or so. Achy. I don't feel well. Low energy.
But, once you get through it, Welcome to HappyierLand
Medications are garbage unless you are one of those less than 5% of users who actually derive benefit.
Unfortunately, placebos work just as well for most.
It is sad the psychiatrist don't properly titrate medication and monitor response like treating high blood pressure.

Re: treatment for depression
Its time I weighed in on this, I am bi-polar.
I had suffered from depression for years and when I finally crashed 12 years ago they started me on some depression meds. They did not work, let me back track, they did not work as advertized. It was 6 months before the doctors finally figured it out, I was bi-polar and they then increased my meds, and finally I had the relief I was looking for.
Over time the meds changed some were stronger some dropped, that's part of the process.
So what do the meds do for you?
Everybody has a happy place, its dead center, that way your not depressed, over joyed, in the corner crying, your stable, your in the zone. Being depressed for years I knew where that zone was but trying to stay in it was very hard. What the drugs do is help you relearn where that happy zone is. You learn where it is and how to stay in it and then you can and should cut out the drugs. This does not mean you wont need to take drugs again in the future, you may, I have, but it will only be for a short time. With all of this you also need to see a therapist because there is a cause or root problem that you need to address.
So there is hope, there is a cure but it takes time - several years.
Recap
1. you need to see a therapist.
2. you need to be on some or several drugs.
3. it will take time and trial and error for the doctors to find the right mix of drugs for you that work.
4. blood tests every three months as some of the drugs can and will do nasty things to your liver and other vital organs.
I know what its like to be so angry that you don't remember what you hit, pure rage.
I know what its like to sit in the corner crying because
I know what its like to be so happy that nothing is wrong in the world.
and I know what its like when you go through all three of these stages every 15 minutes,
you just might need to see a doctor because you can't find your happy zone.
5. Don't give up.

Re: treatment for depression
And Sometimes . . .
And sometimes stuff happens.
As I sit here I suddenly realized - Holiday Season. Sunset at 4:30PM
And I ain't depressed, or more depressed.
Usually I just expect holiday depression and flow with it as a "normal".
But, suddenly I am sleeping well. Real sleep. Not that fitful, did I sleep wake up stuff.
Nothing new here.
Oh, one new thing, yes, yes.
I take a piece of high carbohydrate See's Candy if I wake up at night.
A good bet.
The sugar rush helps me get back to sleep regardless of the blah blah to the contrary.
Otherwise I am Paleo all the way.
Carb abstinence also is good for mood elevation.
The the See's is a "trade off" for sleep.
