Several of my online friends have reported traveling to see a full eclipse and then experiencing CARMAGEDDON trying to drive home.

It seems like in years past and times gone by, masses of people would view a full eclipse and assume something bad was happening and experience fear and terror and get hysterical about some awful bad thing -- a bear eating the sun or some other natural disaster...

However, in modern times there are six to nine hour traffic jams after the full eclipse with people screaming and yelling hysterically at each other while driving at 5mph bumper to bumper.

A friend of mine told me of a new "Emergency 911 problem."

Internet name calling. Mostly Facebook but there are numerous opportunities.

As many of us know, "domestic trouble" calls to 911 are tough for police because those calls are emotional and volatile.

However, the new replacement is "name-calling on the internet."

Yes, people so incensed and angry at being called bad things on the internet that they summon the police and demand satisfaction or they are going to take matters into their own hands...

Why can I say other than "huh?"

Sigh... on one hand - I have grown on the "this is internet, here anyone can tell you to go f... yourself" (or close to it). But it is more complicated nowadays (people do leave amazing amount of information on the social networks and some do depend on them), and well - sometimes just banning offenders does not work. But getting police for that? Don't know.

PS. In earlier times assholes were usually banned from internet communities quickly. Now we have facebook, which is a soapbox for everyone, for free.

I become very frustrated with some social forums, facebook et al. Sometimes l have witnessed protagonists become incensed with each other because of a clear breakdown in communication. I have noticed that it is similar to road rage which can escalate to dangerous levels of animosity very quickly. I believe that internet "hate" and road rage have something in common that causes this escalation, I am sure people have already studied this but I feel it is down to the lack of means to fully express your feelings meaningfully and have those feelings correctly interpreted. You would normally express depth of feeling through tone, volume, pitch and associated body language but due to the limited communication available (typing words) it becomes quickly insufficient and frustration grows rapidly along with animosity to the person who does not seem as sympathetic to your alternative perspective. In a face to face situation tempers are moderated by subtle or subliminal signs and it is possible to have a more polite exchange of views. In road rage it seems very similar, tempers flare due to this breakdown in communication and this can lead to tragic result that are often incomprehensible to either party involved at a later date. I have tried to bear this in mind when on the road as well as when piloting my self around forums on the net. I make a big effort to avoid confrontation and escalation since I have witnessed some really silly situations.

I fairly much agree with that.

No tonly does it get mass exposure, but so many actually believe everything they read on-line as true, Which is itself a huge part of societies problem in this information (actually lack of it) age

I think you are right, I do believe thought that Social Media is having its honeymoon period when it is still new and well trusted. It is like the emperor strutting in his "new suit" of finest cloth before the child points out he is naked and the veil falls from the eyes of the masses. I do hope a significant number of people have the sense to question things eventually.
