Apropos of absolutely nothing, I had reason to resurrect this joke:

A backpacker is traveling through Eastern Europe when it starts to rain. He decides to wait out the storm in a nearby saloon. The only other person at the bar is an older man staring at his drink. After a few moments of silence the man turns to the backpacker and says in a thick accent:

"You see this bar? I built this bar with my own bare hands. I cut down every tree and made the lumber myself. I toiled away through the wind and cold, but do they call me Raul the bar builder? No."

He continued "Do you see that stone wall out there? I built that wall with my own bare hands. I found every stone and placed them just right through the rain and the mud, but do they call me Raul the wall builder? No."

"Do ya see that pier out there on the lake? I built that pier with my own bare hands, driving each piling deep into ground so that it would last a lifetime. Do they call me Raul the pier builder? No."

There's the very old but silly and totally inept:

I tend to leave the TV on all day and when I don't want to hear news or politics anymore, I've put on a variety of crime show series.

What I really want to know is why some of these shows are so creepy. Every episode there's a rapist, a child molester, all sorts of mutilation of dead bodies, hangings, tortures, some of the most vile behavior ever imagined. And worse, it's like the shows want to top each other. So the rapist isn't just a rapist, there's always the twist that makes it more horrible and gaspingly awful...

The drug dealer isn't just dealing drugs, he/she/it is the offspring of insects and/or rape...

What I really want to know is why some of these shows are so creepy....

Blame eyeball count. Commercial TV is supported by advertising. Advertisers want to sponsor [read: pay big bucks for] shows that a lot of people will watch so that a lot of people will see their ads. And creepy stuff has a high eyeball count. If you could get fifty million people to regularly watch shows about cute puppies, you'd see a lot of shows suddenly appear with cute puppies.
