Light Up night in Pittsburgh is this Friday -- November 20th.

There's band concerts downtown, an ice rink, craft merchants selling, beer, fireworks and a Christmas Tree on the side of a building that's been lit up a Christmas since before I was born. It's a big celebration. Like blocks and blocks of wall to wall people having a nice time.

However, downtown Pittsburgh is the junction of three rivers -- the Allegheny from the north, the Monongahela from the south flow into the Ohio (and the Ohio eventually empties into the Mississippi River (old Man River, that Old Man River)

There are three highways that come to downtown Pittsburgh -- The East Street Valley Expressway from the North. The Parkway East from the Eastern Suburbs, Monroeville and Greensburg...

and the Parkway West that goes through Mount Washington and out into the southern and western Suburbs, the airport, and eventually Beaver Falls and Steubenville Ohio and Whelling WV. Big Roads

A stretch of the Parkway East will be shut down for Light up night in both directions.

The inbound lanes of the Parkway West will be closed all day and night.

Light Up Night will be one spectacular celebration followed by one Spectacular traffic jam.

Only in Pittsburgh do they build roads like that.

I remember when the pope came to St Louis one time, John Paul II and they closed down all the freeways just for him. Does that count? not really I guess it was only one night. Although it sounds like fun.

Papal visits are just like phenomenal and the only thing to do is not to drive near the Pope. During this last visit of Pope Francis several blocks of various neighborhoods were simply sealed off and shut down for the night. Nothing moved on the roads but police.

The first times that the Secret Service tried closing entire highways for Presidential Motorcades were full fledged disasters because they shut down the highway is both directions for as long as the motorcade was traveling in one or the other direction. That creates gridlock and traffic jams for hours.

What they did was to establish a rolling zone of the motorcade in one direction and adding police to the other side of the highway. So traffic only stops for the time it takes the motorcade to pass.

There are three big tunnels that take highway traffic in Pittsburgh and if your car even stalls in one of them (or worse a flat or a break down), the cameras see it and the traffic is stopped at the entrance and when all the traffic but you clear out, and a tow truck backs up to the car and hauls it out. The total traffic stop is less than three minutes. Gasoline tankers and other flammable transport is forbidden from the tunnels and uses alternate routes.

I know all the back ways around the tunnels to avoid traffic jams.

I wish all those at Light Up Night a good time and best wishes...

But I'm glad that I'm not driving out of that mess.

You and me both, yes I remember they closed down two freeways both directions for over 2 hours before he was traveling from the residence to the airport the night he left. The side streets were crammed with people who wanted just a glimpse of the Pope, even non catholics were lined up, like me. (cant believe I waited over 2 hours just to see a guy go down the highway facing the other direction). LOL

I was much younger then.

Now days if they say they are closing a highway for? X I am loading up a movie putting on the popcorn stocking in the beer and staying the hell home.
