The Archive Bulletin Boards

At the risk of sounding rude, I CANNOT stress ENOUGH to everyone - new members and old alike ... When you register, please make a note somewhere of your user ID and password. Please read the REST of this notice as well. There is NO excuse for forgetting your User ID and password! Today alone, by noon, 8 emails about this very thing! It's unbelievable.

And for everyone who does this, it takes me anywhere from 10-15 minutes per person to fix it.

Now, for those who may be new to the Archive, we have a message board located at http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin and this is where the real action is!

There are few catches involved, however. If you are not a registered member of EA, you will only see a few boards; by far, you will not be seeing ALL of the forums. In order to see ALL of the forums, you must be registered and you MUST log in. Being a registered member alone will NOT do it for you. If you don't log in, you don't see all of it. LOG IN ... period.

This brings us to the issue of registering. There is a button on the upper right of the message board page that says REGISTER. You have to click this and follow the directions. This means that you will have to use a VALID email address in registering because the software is going to write you a letter. If you use a fake address, you do NOT get registered because you have to follow the confirmation instructions in the email that you will be sent. This is to prevent someone being signed up as a joke, or to be used in identity theft.

Now, I don't mean to be rude here, folks, but this whole process was beta tested by a twelve year old boy who didn't know WHAT he was testing. Certain words were omitted here on this end by word-filtering software, but he signed up with no problem at all. We do not allow minors, no; he was just the 'blind tester' for The _____ Archive located at _____.org. He has no account, don't worry. HOWEVER, every day I am faced with a mailbox FULL of letters saying that people can't log in or register.

Now, let's assume you did successfully register with the name "Jack". You log in with "J" in upper case, no space, and lower case "ack". No quotes, no special characters. The ID always starts with a capital letter, and IT IS CASE sensitive. Therefore, "j" is not seen as "J". Same for the password - case sensitive, no space at the end, no quotes around it. If you cannot log in, DO NOT attempt to register again with the same email. Write to [email protected] for help.

The next issue is with AOL. We have come to the conclusion that there are versions of AOL out there, above 6.0, that VBulletin does NOT like. VBulletin is aware of this; VBulletin doesn't care. WE do, though. To avoid this for AOL users, minimize all AOL windows and view the Archive in IE or Netscape or some other browser window. ALL loads of Windows come with IE in them already. Use it. We have nothing against AOL'ers - their browser is just loopy, ok?

The next topic, FIREWALLS. If you have one like Black Ice, Norton, or Zone Alarm, check that if you can't log in or register. Eunuch.org is spam free and we do not resell your information. You have no worries in allowing this site to pass unmolested through your firewall. Windows XP also has a sort of firewall. Check it in your CONTROL PANEL in Windows to make sure that you are not inadvertently blocking things out. Firewalls are touchy, and when I first installed one, I had the same problems.

If all of this fails, THEN write to us and we will get to the bottom of why you cannot access the boards. Thanks, and please REMEMBER your User ID and passwords! - Paolo
