Philomena

Philomena

is/was a small movie about an Irish woman who as a teen had a baby and was sent to a nunnery. The nunnery put her baby up for adoption and the story is told by the woman in her 60's or 70's searching for her son. She travels to the USA with a reporter friend in search of her son and eventually does find him.

It is based on a true story. You can look all that up. It's a very sad tale. Get a hanky or a box of tissues.

Judi Dench plays the older woman looking for her son. She is an amazing actress and is worth watching.

The actor who plays the reporter who travels with her is very sophisticated, very posh and she is simply Philomena and without pretensions. She just commands the screen.

By the way - don't watch this is you already hate the Catholic Church. It's not an easy story and Philomena is not a simple person to understand. She seems so straightforward and then suddenly becomes very complicated and conflicted. This isn't diatribe or kangaroo court.

The other movie I watched recently like this was that Disney movie - SAVING MR BANKS - and that has a happy ending. Philomena does not end with unicorns and stars and wonderful things.

Philomena was a good movie, and yes it did make you feel negative towards the Catholic Church which has a lot to answer for!💡💡

Her defense of the Church at the end of the movie is a surprise and an insight into her faith.

BTW - I loved her describing a romance novel to her reporter friend and his helplessness at trying not to hear it or even touch the book. It's a delight to watch that scene.
