Eunuch Museum - Tian Yi.

Post by daifu-orchid (imported) »

Right by Tian Yi's tomb, there's the Eunuch Museum in Beijing. The place is a little out of the way, well worth a visit, and by a chance it survived the Cultural Revolution mostly intact, and is now being improved. A couple of links:

I'm kinda happy I didn't get done like this.... :)

Thank you for your description of this important site. I still hope to spend some time visiting China for it's important archaeological sites.

The museum does, though, seem to have taken G. Carter Stent's description of the castration procedure as true. Howard Chiang, a historian who is doing interesting research on Chinese eunuchs, has pointed out that Stent may be very wrong. I have posted a brief synopsis of some of the problems with Stent at:

Interesting. The account as given seems current, at least in BJ now. As to historical fact, like many, that's another thing entirely, particularly in China. This museum and tomb area seems to owe its preservation to being the home of a kindergarten for a time, and so the louts left it mostly unharmed.

There is a rumor that a second museum exists, though I'm still trying to find out about it. Tian Yi Mu is special, and it would be remarkable indeed if another of the same importance survived. Let's hope it turns out to be the nutless father of paper or some equal bane of our lives, or maybe a famous admiral or whatever.

If I find anything interesting or remotely authoritative, I'll post it.
