In a purrfect world, with perfect people - may be it is a welcome change (as a recognition, possibility).

But we do not live in a perfect world. A not perfect world with a cheap disk space. Do you want the information about your transition appearing somewhere after your transition? Anything you put in public server should be considered stored and available forever.

PS. Your gender is female. It is your body that is in process of changing...

I never ever took facebook seriously. Its bad enough that Mark Zuckerberg capitalises on your privacy.

Sorry to butt in, but you're forgetting about being monitored by delusional religious fanatics that have potential control or influence of your life..livelihood. Best thing about facebook...don't ask, don't tell. Personally, I use a disclaimer (very small print).

CBS's "60 Minutes" had an expose' on Internet security and personal information gathering/selling last night; http://www.cbsnews.com/news/shocked-to- ... ching-you/. It included how social sites use your info (not to mention employers); and mentioned Facebook as one of the main culprits.

If you are going to use those social sites, check out a free software app; https://disconnect.me/

It allows you to 'see' who is 'watching you', and works with most common devices; including PC's, laptops, workbooks, and most modern mobile phone devices. It will not interfere with your security / virus patrol software.

Be careful out there. Follow the money: if the service is "free", they're making money form you somehow, and it's usually data to be sold. Otherwise, you think you are getting something for nothing? It does happen, but usually no.

I should mention Disconnect (https://disconnect.me/) is still in beta, and they are working on some issues.

I installed it last night, just to "see it in action", and could go nowhere on the internet. It said I had 2 Facebook issues when I tried to open BING Maps, and I don't even use Facebook . . . (BING does though).

Uninstall takes patience.

Maybe not for the faint of heart, but I used to use Tor on my travels. Tor is a deeply proxied network worldwide which obfuscates your location. (Google hates it) Other search engines put up with not knowing where you are. Seems an interesting pair with Disconnect? Also give a thought to duckduckgo.com?

I have a facebook presence, but only rarely use it, and only for specific situations where nothing else works as well or better. LinkedIn works better for me, most of the time.

Because I am licensed as a professional engineer and because my license requires that I work in accord with the Code of Ethics of the National Society of Professional Engineers, which Code prohibits deception in professional engineering, and because my work in applied theoretical biology (aka, bioengineering) is strongly focused on the sociobiology of deception, I have chosen to be very thoroughly "out" regarding my "two spirit" situation. No one else can out me if I have outed myself first.

Because I work as a self-employed professional engineer in private practice, I am in no danger of being fired by my boss for being out or being outed.

Yes, some anonymizers are hated by Google and some others; they can't figure out who you are or where you are to blast with targeted ads. As this is the ultimate purpose of offering the "free" service, they don't necessarily want to play.
