Actually the "X" in Xmas was started by Christians and represented a "cross". Think flags that have crosses such as the Union Jack and so forth. But ironically most Christians would object to it now being ignorant.

The cross upon which Christ was crucified was the tau-cross and is signified by the Greek letter tau, T. The chi-cross, X, is a St. Andrew's cross and would never have been used to represent Christ. The use of X for Christ or Christus, as Tugon says, represents the original spelling of Χριστοc the Greek word for 'annointed', a translation of the Hebrew term signifying his status as God's chosen.

The Union Jack has a St. Andrew's cross (the x) because he is the patron saint of Scotland; the +cross is St. George's cross, the patron saint of England.

I did a little research on this and Charles Dickens wrote out a version of THE CHRISTMAS CAROL for reading and performed that version many times. This is abridged by the author's own hand.

Apparently Dickens enjoyed his novel and used it for many public readings.

Last Sunday I attended a performance of A CHRISTMAS CAROL read on stage in the manner of a radio play. A new experience for me and great fun. The theater sells wine so my wife had an especially good time. --FLO--
