Machete

Post by transward (imported) »

By chance today, while looking for another show, I happened upon the last 30 or so minutes of the movie Machete, starring Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Lindsey Lohan, Robert De Niro, and others. I have no idea what the plot was; I'm not sure it had one. It had something to do with good guys and bad guys and drugs and illegal immigration and crooked politicians but none of it seemed to make any sense. It was sort of a glorious mash-up of a Road Runner or Bugs Bunny cartoon, a slasher film, the surrealism of late Fellini, Edgar Scissorshand, and a romantic comedy. I think, just from the last few minutes that it is easily my favorite film of the last ten years. I mean it has everything Leather-clad bikini babe nurses with bazookas (the military ones in addition to the ones in their bikinis), a Catholic priest crucified, an army of missile equipped low-riders. Amazing movie

Somebody had that on a TV at an assistive care facility I was touring yesterday. The place had a eighteen female occupants and I'm not sure if any were even paying attention. Quite brutally goofy -- cartoony is the right word you used.

Do keep in mind when watching this movie that it was entirely made as a bit of a joke.

In Tarantino's "Death Proof", there were a series of fake movie-ads at the end. One of them was "Machete". It was really just a throw-away idea... until Rodriguez got his hands on it, and Tarantino's blessing.

It was born as a joke, filmed on a lark, and put in theaters with zero expectations. DeNiro et. al. participated knowing full well it was a silly thing; the only one in the flick who seemed to take it (and himself) seriously was, of course, Steven Segal, who wouldn't recognize a joke if it was a stuffed mackerel endlessly slapping him in the face.

Anyone else notice how Segal (the humorless prick!) insisted that instead of Trejo's Machete character killing him, he INSISTED on a script change letting him kill HIMSELF, because "No character like Machete should be able to kill one of my characters"? What a vainglorious buffoon.

That said, I loved the movie, too. Pure goofyness!

Good news for you Machete fans. A sequel, Machete Kills, just opened this past Friday. This one has Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga and Charlie Sheen (billed as Carlos Estevez) in it.

Have any of you seen the flick "Bad Ass"?

It stars Danny Trejo, and it is funny in a brutal sort of way... much like his head on the back of that tortoise in "Breaking Bad"...
