Dogma

Post by Paolo »

I just watched this last night. Yeah, I'm a bit behind on movies, since it usually takes me 3 or 4 days to watch one with all the interruptions here.

I found the plot to be, to say the least, ridiculous. Many of the characters, such as the 3 demon boys, were under-explained and I had no idea what was going on half of the time. Alan Rickman as the "Voice of God" just didn't get it, although his little speech about having to break the news to Jesus when he was 12 was moving. I kept waiting for him to shouts "Five points from Gryffindor, Potter!" Poor man, I guess he's type-cast now.

Alanis Morrisett as God? In a word, no.

Morgan Freeman, yes. George Burns, yes.

But the idea of sneaking up on God? That sort of wrecked it.

I did like Matt Damon as the retired Reaper, though. I am guessing the two rogue angels went to Hell? The ending was a bit unresolved. Still, he was pretty good with his acting, and all that killing. The board room massacre was great when he began naming off their sins for them.

There were some good jokes about not having genitals, but that was about as far as it went. Marylin Manson's genderless costume from his 90's video was a better job than the awful bit with Rickman exposing himself. The man has proven he can act, but he didn't do it in this film.

Overall, it was senseless and boring, but all the carnage at the end was great.

I'd give it 4 out of 5 lemons.

DOGMA and GALAXY QUEST are 1999 movies.

SORCERER'S STONE is 2001.

Your kids can watch GALAXY QUEST.

The courts will take your kids away from you as unsuitable if you let them watch DOGMA.

;)

I saw DOGMA in a theater and the reactions ranged from wild laughter (it is a comedy) to amazingly offended shrieks and gasps.

I don't think I've seen a movie that more religiously offensive than DOGMA. Honest. It tries so hard to offend and still be funny...

DOGMA is mockery of all religion in the form of "high farce". I mean like druggie high, too.

There's nothing classy about it.

Think of this as in the realm of SOUTH PARK - BIGGER LONGER AND UNCUT.

That's the only other movie that made me feel I was damned to hell for watching it.

I mean even HELLRAISER didn't do that and those first two movies in the HELLRAISER series are truly evil.

Yes it is. Kevin Smith is truly offensive, to some, in that movie. It is also uplifting, to others, me. Considering all the dogma I grew up with in the church and the persecution by those who objected my lifestyle, this movie was a welcome relief. The idea that God is a she? maybe and that angels can escape heaven if they find the proper loop hole. But am a fan of Clerks II and what it says about friendship. As for the other movies Quest was awesome, in it's reverence to Trek, and Bigger was the best musical I ever heard until I saw Book of Mormon. NC

Please use your "TRUCKMA" or perhaps your "STEAMROLLERMA"... we don't want any re-runs...

I enjoyed it. I watched it with my children.

As someone who doesn't believe in imaginary heavenly friends, or live a magical, mystery delusion. Kevin Smith was gratifying.

Tried Netflix and Hulu and it didn't load.
