Well we know the GOP wants to turn back the clock, some want the 1950's others it would seem the 1850...they don't like women having earning power or options. For that matter that don't seem to want anyone who isn't white to be able to vote easily. Only white male presidents. Less non-white people overall in the country...

Hell seems to me most of the modern day problems is that most of one party yearns for yesterday like Moi. There is a reason they are almost uniformly white and OLD. Gerrymandering isn't going to keep them from dying out of old age.

I never took the Russians as stupid and believed even at that time, they did NOT eat their babies

and that they knew; Nuking western Europe would poison Mother Russia too.

Maybe it was my clairvoyance because, as a kid watching all those Twilight Zones and bomb shelter constructions - I never believed the Russians / USSR would initiate Nuks. Further, I did not believe America would either although America would be more likely to do so.

Yes, I remember people being scared during the Cuban Missile Crisis. My mother for one.

I just felt sure, very - very sure it was not going to happen. Feelings leave strong memories and I do remember the above is how I felt.

My friend, an alter boy at the time remembers how no one or a trickle use to come to confession but in that time, there was a line around the block.

Maybe I was just a fatalist back then.

And yes, I honestly "feel" we are more threatened by military style weapons today then we were then.

1950s - No Civil Rights for minorities. Poll taxes. Segregation. No Women's rights. McCarthy. Korean War. Hungarian revolution put down.

1960s - Assassinations. Race Riots. Chicago 1968 Convention. Vietnam. Cuba crisis. 1968 saw the beginning of the GOP's "Southern Strategy" The Berlin Wall is built.

1970s - Watergate. 1st President resigns to head off impeachment. Cambodia bombing. Vietnam Veterans treated like criminals. Gas shortages. Inflation. Iran Hostage Crisis. DISCO!!!!

1980s - Renewed arms race. Trickle Down Economics. Rise of the "Moral Majority" Liberal became a bad word.

These are just off the top of my head with no research done on my part. Most of those years weren't great if you weren't a white male.

As for it being a light subject. I would agree...except there is one of two major political parties in this country who want to turn the clock back as far as they can! They spent a great deal of effort attempting to suppress the voting rights of minorites in 2012. They are talking about changning the way the Electoral College votes are allocated to enable them to win since they can't do it fairly.

During the Cold War, the Reds and the Free World kept the lid on these activities

more better

by sponsoring & controlling governments and insisting, no personal wars.

And they were more effective at it, weren't they?

It was just as bad in yesteryear. I don't think you are taking into account the 24/7 news cycle we now live with. Everywhere is now local with the news networks plus social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Its all much more in your face than the Vietnam war was on just the three networks. Back then they had 30 minutes every night to bring us the world. Now its never off.
