Fishing
Fishing is a sport like no other, if you love to fish then it does not matter if you catch anything or not, however on those rare days like today when you go fishing and you leave because your tired, arms are sore, your out of worms, and you only fished for 5 hours.
Today was one of those days, my next door neighbor and his son who goes to swim my son and I went fishing in the St Croix, about an hour after we got there another friend joined us, the count was Joe-4, Me-4, Patt-2, and Gary-0, soon the score was 6, 5, 3, 6, when we hit 14, 10, 5, 17 we stopped counting. We were about 30 to 35 fish caught and released before we decided to keep them, then we only saved the smaller ones, all about a foot long. We were catching Walleye and Sheep Heads. We started with three tubs of night crawlers 18 pack plus I had half of one left over from Sunday where Joe and I caught 6 and 5. Gary brought his own 18 pack, then the wives made an NC run for 4 dozen more, when we ran out of worms we started with soft lures which was OK because I ran out of hooks, the fish kept eating them 36 of them. My son Patt who does not like to fish, (said it is boring) was still fishing with a lure when the rest of us had packed up my friends had already left, when Patt caught the biggest fish of the day, a 25in sheep head, it could have been the one I caught half hour before that but we estimate that we caught between 85 and 100 fish, we released well over half of them and still brought home 47 fish.
Patt caught the fewest number of fish and he bagged over 20.
Yes we ate fish tonight, my son is ready to go again. We told him all evening that a day like today happens once or twice in a life time.
It was an incredible day of fishing, one that I will remember for the rest of my life, Patt will remember it for the rest of his life too.

Re: Fishing
Will you learn net casting from the shore in Hawai'i ?
My problem with fishing is just when I get comfortable,
a fish disturbs my comfort zone.
Doesn't sound like you guys had a moment to get comfortable.

Re: Fishing
Is this fishing? Last Saturday began the "Noodling" season in Kansas. It's now legalized here and one has to buy a license to stick your hand in a hole to see if there's a fish there. Of course, you may find other things, broken glass, rusting cans, snakes, anything that will fit in a hole. As a child in South Africa I was taught NOT to put my hand in anything the contents or occupants of which could not be discerned. There were 127 varieties of venomous snakes so that was always possibility along with a plethora of other animals and insects that preferred to retire underground. When I see turbid water certain things come to mind and not one of them is sticking my hand in the bank below the water line. Recently we've had what is called the "River Festival" here and due to the effluvia dumped in the river in Dodge City from the hog abattoirs the USDA as well as the Health department have to approve anyone getting within 20 yards of the stream. Also, this year, a man disappeared up river and, fortunately, came to the surface in spot where the festival was not being held. The authorities had been noodling for him. So for those of you who wish to come here and noodle for fish, remember to buy a license and get a tetanus shot. ,

Wow, River...Is that Wisconsin? I recall as a kid, fishing in Lake Erie, in Turkey Point, Ontario, with my grampa...I saw a few sheephead caught, and, at the time, we treated them as an invasive species..They grow very large, but I didn't think they were any good to eat...Great fishing.. I know walleyes are supposed to be delicious..Have fun..Jackie

Re: Fishing
They frown on fishing with explosives here now. In fact, they frown on explosives, period.
DuPont spinners are a good method. But they do tend to do your filleting on close-to-hand fish.
BTW, there is no fish nicer (IMO) than a baked walleye fillet breaded with crushed almonds. I still remember the first one on my 10th birthday.

Paolo needs to take his boat and to take you fishing in his neck of the woods. You don't need a pole, or bait, just a slow open boat...

Re: Fishing
Silver (Asian) Carp are, pound for pound, the most frequently eaten farmed fish in the world. They've been carefully bred and cultivated in China for millennia. A check on Baidu.com turns up hundreds of pages on their cultivation – diet, pond culture, treatment of diseases, etc. There are hundreds of recipes on line. (There are probably thousands of pages, but I stopped looking after a while.)
Silver Carp is far less often eaten in Japan, though I've had it several times, including as sashimi, prepared by an expert who could remove every bone (best with soy sauce and grated ginger).
You Hoosiers just need to eat down the overpopulation in the Wabash....

Re: Fishing
Really, sounds like the palate of the native American of the mid west which is on the eastern side of the country should suck it up and eat fish twice a week, from what I have seen they are jumping right into the boats.
