Flight (2012 film) Directed by Zemeckis

Post by Dave (imported) »

Flight is a 2012 American drama film. Starring Denzel Washington, it is director Robert Zemeckis' first live-action film since Cast Away and What Lies Beneath, which were both released in 2000, and the first R-rated film directed by him since Used Cars back in 1980, as well as the first ImageMovers release to date to have an R-rating. Flight was nominated for two Academy Awards at the 85th Academy Awards: Best Actor (for Washington) and Best Original Screenplay (for John Gatins).

It was on PPV.

Let me say that the first 30 or 35 minutes are the most harrowing and stunning plane flight and crash ever put to film.

But there's 3/4's of the movie left and Denzel Washington does not play a good guy.

This is an R-rated movie about an alcoholic and Zemeckis put together an amazing script and a brilliant movie.

Amazing is right! The unfolding of the plot was not what you expected from the trailers. Viewing it was even more intense since I went to see it with a friend who is a recovering alcoholic.

You want to see another rough film about addiction that this reminded me of?

The old "Clean and Sober" with Michael Keaton. It's tough to watch even for the sober among us.

Denzel Washington is excellent in FLIGHT.

Yea. That movie really has a strange twist. I mean, yes he terrible prick to everyone. And yes he was drinking at the time he was flying. But he saved everyone despite all the FAA people saying that no one else could have done it! You kind of figure he wouldn't be whacked so hard at the end of it all.

Clean and sober was a good movie also. A bit dry but that is ok.

I kind of think he had to be whacked that hard at the end...

We have a real hero to compare to the movie character.

US Airways 1549 lost power and "glided" (more like fell but it's a plane so even when falling like a rock it glides) into the Hudson River off New York. The true hero (Sullenberger) and his copilot took that plane into an amazing landing and saved everyone on board. No booze, no parties, no affair with the stewardess. Just a person who knew all the procedures and trained for a near impossible situation.

The "heroism" of Denzel WAshington's character is not letting his dead girlfriend take the blame for those "two vodka bottles" ... that was the stewardess in bed with him the night before and the same stewardess sitting on the jump seat in the middle of the cockpit helping them roll the jumbo jet. That's the "bravery" that redeems the movie. She wasn't safe at all and she knew it.

The character of the pilot is a tough sell to an audience -- he's hateful. He's a drunk, a druggie and he's arrogantly out of control. He does one admirable thing in the entire movie...
