Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I saw it today, and I very much enjoyed it. You do have to keep in mind that it is a Star Trek movie. If you like Star Trek, you should like this movie. It had a scene, only reversed, out of the old original Star Trek series, Genesis, I believe. If you remember that show, you'll know what I mean.
The show was full of non stop action. I was never bored with it.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I will wait for it to come out on video thanks. JJ Abrams won't be getting my full price admission on this one.
Let me spoil it a bit. The villain is Khan Noonian Singh. Yes. The very same guy from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Why is this a problem for me? Mainly because it rips off the storyline from not just the most respected of the Star Trek Films, but from one of the greatest movies of all time. But also because JJ Abrams apparently thinks I am a moron. For over a year now, the director has been telling us, "No. It isn't Khan. This is a whole new villain, and a whole new story."
Then the teaser came out, and people like me said, "Benedict Cumberbatch really sounds like Khan. It really looks like you are doing a rehash, and nothing original."
Abrams again said, "Nope. Not Khan."
Then the first of three trailers came out. There was that moment at the end when Kirk and Spock's hands meet, separated by plexiglass, and a red flashing radiation warning in the background.
Hey. Wait a minute. That looks a lot like Spock's death scene in Wrath of Khan. "Are you sure this isn't Khan?" we ask.
"Trust me," says Abrams. "I wouldn't screw around with such an iconic character. It would be like I'm raping the franchise and have absolutely no original ideas. I wouldn't do that to my loyal fans."
The second trailer comes out, and clearly shows Cumberbatch leaping around like a genetically augmented human.
The third trailer comes out, and there are several seconds of footage of the interior of the Botany Bay, complete with Cryo-Stasis pods on full display.
Now what genetically augmented human, spent any time in cryo-stasis in the old series? Who would proclaim so dramatically, "I will have my REVENGE"? And how does that tie in with Spock and Kirk trying to reach out to each other, but being separated by plexiglass while Radiation warnings flash in the background? Hmm... Let me think...
"Could it be Khan? Come on Abrams, level with the fans. It's Khan, isn't it? We all know it is Khan. Just admit it."
"I would never stoop so low as to do that," claims Abrams. "This is a new universe with new rules, and a whole new original story. I am a great writer. It is completely original and surprising. Just wait and see. Khan is yesterday's news. Khan who? What I've written and directed is so much bigger and more amazing. I am awesome, and a Hollywood God now. What I say is law, and I say, it is not Khan. Khan can suck my giant hairy testicles. You fans think you are so smart, but you totally suck. I don't know how these rumors get started. Really. If I was going to use Khan I would just say so. You should be ashamed of yourself."
Then the movie comes out.
Also the truth.
Cumberbatch is playing Khan. Abrams steals the plot of Star Trek II without understanding what truly made it great. He turns one of the greatest movie stories of all time into just another popcorn action flick. Full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing.
"So Abrams," I ask. "Will you now finally admit it was Khan?"
"Surprise!" he responds with a shit eating grin. "Aren't I amazing?"
"Only in your own mind, JJ. Only in your own mind."
No. I'm not paying to see this in the theatre. I'll wait six months and it will be on Netflix along with all his other crap. He doesn't get my money anymore.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I will probably catch up to it at a Pirate site
as I did the last Star Trek movie.
Computer wired to big flat screen.
The last time I went to a movie theater, it was a big, fine, modern one.
I went with my wife and saw "Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship "
We were both "ill" from the noise for six hours after.
Likes the movie just too loud.
Moi
Or when it comes on cable.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
Yes it was Kahn but was he the villain in this story, actually Yes and NO oops, he was only doing what any person in his position would do so I don't think of him as the villain now there was a villain but it was not him.
Oh now I went and did it.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I said to my family at Easter Dinner --
the new Star Trek Movie was being over-hyped and that's going to hurt it eventually.
They hid the plots, leaked them tiny bit by tiny bit just to tease the "true believers" and that paid off with the "true believers" and the Star Trek fans who will go regardless. But it was over-hyped and over-exposed and over-sold.
That doesn't mean that it's not entertaining or not watchable or not fun but this is what happens with all that advertising BS.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I am a massive Star Trek fan (Even know how to speak Klingon). Yes this new film is a rehash of some older Trek films, but the point is, that after the last film, this is sort of like an alternate timeline Star Trek. So I feel they can get away with using some plot lines from the old films, but then tweak them to show that it is not just a copy.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved the film and I have to say that I have heard from non Trekkie fans that they loved it too. So I say to others, if you are thinking of going to see it, do so. But treat it as a film in it's own right and not as a remake of an old film.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
I don't quite know how I feel about someone who speaks Klingon and has the honesty to admit to it. (No offence intended) I liked most of the Star Trek television shows even with all their limitations both technical and commercial. I do not like the Star Trek movies. The movies are not offensive but are just temporary time wasters, as most movies are. So, give the new movie a break, I am sure it holds its own as an action flick and that is all it needs to do. --FLO--

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness
IEunuch went to see this move last night. When he comes to chat tonight, I'll get his opinion of it. At the theater IE went to, it was a double feature with Iron Man III.
