A History of Pearly

Post by Andrew (imported) »

Over in alt.support.menopause (where I am an Honorary Menobabe), a newcomer asked who was this "Pearly" I mentioned frequently. Here, for those eunuchs still interested in pussy, is what I wrote.

@@@@@@@@@

Pearly is a 15 year old (best guess by two vets) domestic shorthair. She started life as a street cat for several years. Like most such cats, she probably had her share of abuse from humans. Then she was taken in by a lady who had seven such street cats in her house, but did little to socialize them. She was an AA lady who died in February of this year after 5 years sobriety. A call went out to AA members asking if there were any willing to adopt one of these cats.

I adopted two, Pearly and Tyler, but both went into hiding as soon as I get them home. Tyler was found dead a month later, cause unknown, and I want on a huge crying jag. As a eunuch, I tend to do a lot of crying nowadays. By this time it was realized that all seven cats were semi-feral. Pearly had NEVER been socialized, and I was instructed to track her down and put her in a cage.

The nice folks at PACT (People And Cats Together) gave me a small cage to put Pearly in, and she spent the next 4 months in that cage in my bedroom. I would feed her, and change the litter, and talk to her. When I was sleeping or away, a blanket covered the cage. When I was in the bedroom, the blanket came off so she could see me walking around. I would take to her all the time.

This may seem cruel, but in actual fact the idea was to condition Pearly that the cage, and the bedroom, were SAFE. And I, a human in her life, was SAFE. And it worked. After 4 months I opened the cage door. For the next couple of weeks she stayed in the cage anyway, but one day she decided that she wanted to be in bed with me, and that was that. She was socialized.

However, I had to move soon, so I kept her confined to my bedroom. After I moved to my new apartment, Pearly decided to stay in the two bedrooms. I have her litter boxes and some toys in the smaller bedroom, and her food and water dishes in dishes in my room. She has scratching pads in both bedrooms, but uses only the one in my bedroom.

I tried putting the food dishes outside my room, but she refused to go to them. So I moved the dishes to the area between my bedroom and the living room. She eats the food and drinks the water, but simply will NOT go into the living room, even when I am there.

Right now, she thinks of my bedroom as "SAFE". She spends most of her time on top of my bed, resting on a heating pad. She seems quite content, shows no signs of boredom, eats and drinks and uses the litter boxes without fuss, and wants me to pet her all the time. I fall asleep petting and stroking her, and sniffing her fur. (Kinky!)

Will she ever decide to leave the bedroom and explore the rest of the apartment? Hard to say. But if she does, it will have to be at her own time. But, at the moment, she seems to be content.

OH, the name "Pearly" comes from her former owner. Pearly is a 5-1/2 pound black cat with a small white patch on her throat, almost like a white pearl. Hence her name. Her kidneys are a bit weak, so she is on Hills Prescription Diet Feline K/D dry food. Otherwise, she seems to be in good health.

So kind for taking in the cats. I am sorry about the death of the other one. Although I still have my testicles, that would have sent me on a crying jag too.

I am a cat guy ... I have always had cats and I love them. I think they are the best pets one could have.

When my last cat died I went a few months with out a pet, then went out and bought the first pure breed cat I have ever owned. All my other cats have been animal shelter cats.

She is my 'widdle baby cat' ;) and I love her very much. As I type she is laying on top of my monitor peering down at me in her wise, superior gaze :)

For those interested she's a Russian Blue.

Andrew,

Congratulations! This is the first message I've posted.

Anyway...

My little indoor kitty, the one who keeps booting me off the chat line by jumping on the keyboard, had a similar habit of remaining in one room instead of exploring her new world. She was an orphan of around aeven weeks of age when BigGuy and I found her crying in the rain.

We managed to cause her to expand her range (within the house) by carrying her, petting all the while, with us as we moved about the house. We also helped her "discover" little bits of food and some toys in different locations. It helped a lot, too, to hold her on our laps as we sat in different rooms.

Now, she knows every inch of her 3500 sq. ft. domain, which she rules with an iron paw. She occasionally is allowed into the backyard and she has slowly adapted to that environment too.

Of course, she tries to plant her flag there too, but had to share it with two bird dogs. Amazingly, they seem to have adopted her and they will often lie together to sun themselves and share grooming chores.

It takes one of the dogs about thirty seconds to "bathe" the cat. The cat takes about an hour to return the favor. She seems especially determined to assure that their "privates" are always squeaky clean. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, has she been watching me and BigGuy?

Try the "forced" mobility exercises with Pearly. Be patient and it might work.

Why not a litter box in the bedroom? No less hygenic then if you kept it in the bathroom. Smell? It shouldn't. If you can smell it, the cat can smell it even better, and sooner or later will find a less smelly place for its tasks.

So I keep the litter boxes clean, and scoop three times a day. Pearly is happy to use the litter boxes. No problems.

Pearly, do have anything to add?

No, I do not have a box of shit in my house. I do have two boxes with a lot of sand in them. At times, Pearly uses the boxes. After she does, I scoop out the results, place them in a sealed plastic bag, and dispose of them in the dumpster outside.

No worse then humans using toilet bowls and flushing the results into pipes that go who-knows-where.

As for dogs ruling, let them.

I do not allow Pearly to eat butter or any other human food. She requires

At an AA meeting a couple of weeks ago, one of the members looked at me and said "Guardian Angels sometimes come with 4 legs and fur."

Andrew ...

I have one of the Litter Maid automatic litter boxes, and while I was very skeptical at first I bought one ...

It really does work as advertised.

Paolo,

I just hope Fenris doesn’t try eating one of the neighborhood black and white striped pussies.
