Real mincemeat has real beef suet in it. My grandmother used to make it with suet, plus whatever dried fruits and nuts were available. The suet was central to it. The Vermont Country Store version uses vegetable oil and should be called "imitation mincemeat."
The REAL BEEF fat provides the appropriate richness and mouthfeel that mincemeat should have....

Thank you.
I feel the same about Mexican cooking and lard.
Refried Beans creamed up with Lard is a wonderful food.
Still, in more ancient times, weren't there real pieces of meat, honey, nuts and fruity stuff?
The problem in the day was the preservation of meat and they discovered honey & sweets did it to some degree.

Re: Dessert
Hermit cookies was a cookie the my Dad used to make when we were kids. They are a soft cookie. Without finding the recipe to check, I think I used Allspice. The recipe called for raisins but I switched to mincemeat but on a couple of occasions I kept the raisins with the mincemeat. But I don't really need 6 dozen cookies hanging around to make me fat.

Re: Dessert
The hermit cookies sound good, and a good childhood memory.
I've never had mincemeat of any kind. I posted the links because it was the only mincemeat I'd ever seen. Here's what Wikipedia has to say -
"Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits and spices, and sometimes beef suet, beef, or venison. Originally, mincemeat always contained meat.[1] Many modern recipes contain beef suet, though vegetable shortening is sometimes used in its place. Variants of mincemeat are found in Australia, Brittany, Canada, northern Europe, Ireland, South Africa, the UK and the United States. In some countries the term mincemeat refers to minced or ground meat."

Re: Dessert
Bobover, All those ingredients are in traditional mincemeat preparations. Still tastes wonderful to me. Perhaps because of the ingredients, many people don't "like" it...probably in their minds. Of course, there are a lot of calories in it. But, only having it at Christmas helps in the eating and calories ....and fat content for those of us with cholesterol problems.
As I was growing up, I remember my dad and stepmother canning green tomato mincemeat.....no meat in it. I don't have the recipe for that, though.
