Even though this is the Deep Dark Cellar, I don't think a debate on Death Penalty is a good Idea.
Debates on Death Penalty, Mandatory castration of sex offenders and a few others just end up with name calling and hurt feelings.
Both sides have valid reasons for believing what they feel is just. The biggest question really is can you be 100% sure that the people are guilty? In most cases people are not 100% sure and from real life examples people have been wrongly convicted.
This is too great of a community to let some personal unrelated differences cause disputes among us.

Re: The Maryland sniper
...I'll kill them.
Don't worry, it might make me not too much better than them, but remember, they started it.
After all, it's not our faults that the Supreme Court made rulings that make it cheaper to keep people incarcerated the rest of their natural lives than to execute them.
Really though, can we talk?
If you put these jokers in the open populations in most state prisons in the nation they wouldn't last 6 months.
The other inmates would kill them.
As for the 17-year-old.
His future is dying of AIDS in a prison somewhere after he is fucked 7 different ways from Sunday by the preditors.
They would have him dead or in a dress the first week and you all know it, too. Don't you? Besides that , 'ol Mohammed has probably already fucked the shit out of him.
It is too bad because "the kid" has such a nice smile.
But Killing would be the most merciful end for both of them.

Unfortunately, A-1, that form of justice seems to be no longer true, according to my daughter who works in a max security prison. She says that these days even child molesters and murderers don't even get raised eyebrows from the other inmates these days.
On another note, there was a very long article in the Raleigh paper this morning about the 13 year old who was shot. It is absolutely amazing what that kid endured and how hard he fought back.
For example, after he had been shot, his insides all torn to hell, he got up and walked the few steps to aunt's car, got in, and sat there while she drove to the hospital. He is home now, and he walked out of the hospital on his own! Score one for the good guys.

Re: The Maryland sniper
For the most part I haven't dealt with correctional systems in a while.
I do know that they are much better managed than they have been in the past but again, that varies from state to state.
I do know that they are not very pleasant places to be and that the survival of some inmates depend on their ability to remain in close management. (read, the hole, tank, & so forth)
The case of Jeffry Dahlmer comes to mind. I am sure that there are still some state institutions where the preditors are allowed to run amok because it makes the places easier to manage if you have the inmate population constantly in conflict with themselves.
I know several people who have retired from various penal systems as correctional officers. Tell your daughter that there is hope.
