RIP: Shannon Larratt 1973 - 2013
I just heard this, and thought I should pass it along.
BME is announcing that Shannon Larratt has passed away (http://news.bme.com/2013/03/15/rip-shan ... 1973-2013/).
I didn't really know him personally, just by his work. We met once, we talked a few times. He was a great person, and without him it's quite likely that this site wouldn't be where it is today. Other than that, I don't really know what to say.
He will definitely be missed.

Holy crap! I didn't even know he was sick. He was just emailing me last december about a new book he was working on. Well damn I'm going to miss him.

Shannon's "Goodbye" message description of his condition hints at, in my mind, something like fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, one of a number of genetic conditions in which aspects of cell metabolism can "get out of whack" with personally disastrous effects of the sort in which soft tissues become much like hard tissues in ways that profoundly impair quality of life.
For myself, I am grateful for his work that allowed the Eunuch Archive to have a starter home (while it lasted).

Sad news indeed. I've updated the announcements on MBM to let our members know of his passing.
For those who wish to see his last thoughts regarding life and body modification, please go read his last entry on his Zentastic (http://www.zentastic.com/blog/2013/03/1 ... ommedia-3/) blog. He had quite a bit to share with us, and he made some excellent points.
We are in the middle of revamping MBM and I'm hoping I can integrate some of his ideas into the site.

From a Facebook posting:

Started my morning reading so many comments about Shannon and the people he touched with his work, art, life, and words. I marvel at how many say "we didn't always agree with each other" or "we argued" etc. but acknowledge his gifts talents and contribution to this community; their respect for him as a person; and really this shows the character of him I think. I didn't know Shannon. I did meet him the year he came to APP and saw how he was "just like us" in his social awkwardness and nerves about speaking; and yet somewhat not like us because of who he had become to so many.
While a huge critic of suicide and its effects on the living; having read Shannon's last words and knowing his relationship with his daughter and really his love of life evident in his work... I accept that his pain must have been profound and that this decision to leave excruciatingly difficult.
I just hope he knew the widespread influence of his days on this earth.
Peace and a hope for good grieving for his family, his friends, and his community.

It is with heavy heart I hear this. I consider myself most lucky to have met the man and to have spoken with him on the phone many times. Yes, he was intrumental in the development and survival of the archive.
Shannon was a kind and generous man. He did things in life that many have tried in the past to emulate. Some still try unsucessfully. Shannon was very level headed and knew how to have fun. He was practical and had integrity with a sense of class.
I have looked to him for advice with problems and have always gotten a sound response. I looked up to him and still do.
It is not often that I cry and please forgive me, but I am and it is stupid but it is what is happening.
I'll live though with the joy of having known him.
Goodbye and thank you Shannon

I have no words right now...Perhaps when the severity of the blow has softened with time...But today...No words

I got off to a bad start and I have been running late today and now this news to ruin my night. I have been emailing him and talking to him on the phone all this winter so it just seems impossible to believe right now. --FLO--
