For Riverwind, The Fraj, Scottie, and Eunuch Paul

Since the topic of post-surgical depression has come up, I thought it might help if I passed along a letter I received shortly after my own castration. She was Mary Ann Lee aka Jesse Bear but I do not have her current E-mail address. I'll have more to say at the bottom of this posting, but please read this letter first....

As re calcium: I use a calcium supplement called "Bone Complex" from Willner Chemists in New York. (www.willner.com) You can order it over the net. It is totally amazing! I genetically have osteoporosis, and I am using a drug called Fosamax, but was still getting burning sensations in my spine despite using it. The Bone Complex tabs (two tabs once or twice daily depending on your needs) totally knocked that out. It has totally stopped any symptoms. If you want good long-term calcium protection that really works, try it, you'll love it.

Also, a few more things:

Castration does not change our habits, it makes things nice and quiet, so we can have a noise free environment to work on ourselves. I.e. if we are angry before, we will be angry after, unless we work on the source of the anger. The eunuch stillness really makes things nice, and after a while you will not think about sex very much, but will still retain the capacity to become sexually excited about someone you meet that pushes the right buttons.

If you find that you are getting a bit depressed or getting hot flashes, you can get an herb at health food stores called Dong Quai. It really stops the hot flashes and depressions. Also, be easy on yourself. You may get a lot of negative thoughts and regrets about castration, and feel that you look: weird, or freaky, or less than a man, when viewing your genitals in the mirror. This is normal, and it takes about a year to mourn the loss of your old body and accept your new one. We all go through this phase, and it's OK to feel any feelings that come up. The good thing is that after about a year, you will feel so good you will be in orbit!

Yes, in about a year, maybe less, you will be in The Eunuch Calm. Until then, feel free to e-mail me. If you want to talk to me, I'd be happy to supply you with my phone number via the EA Private Message system. HANG IN THERE!!!!

By the way, you will note she mentioned DONG QUAI as a way to combat depression and hot flashes. In all honesty, I should mention that I tried the stuff but it didn't work for me. Some of the Menobabes over in alt.support.menopause have tried it, with mixed results. There seems to have been no proper studies of its effectivennes vs. a placebo.

Thank you Andrew for your interesting reply. I shall refer to it whenever I get any hot flashes, if I should do. I asked that question to Dr. Kimmel and he did not think this would be a problem for me. Time will tell. Your interest is well recieved by me, and needless to say, I shall keep in touch.

I am still in the recovery stages of this and will be back to see Dr. Kimmel tomorrow (10/24). More action then!

:) The care and compassion shown on this board never fails to amaze me!

I'll have to give that Dong Quai a try! (We have loads of health stores here in Liverpool!)

Oh, and (as I've mentioned to a few people already) a member of my immediate family recommends more Magnesium in the diet. Hehe, okay this isn't a clinically proven fact, but she's found it helps (she's umm, had a similar procedure :D )

Thanks once again!

Here in the USA, every drugstore (what you call a "chemist") has a section that includes vitamins and minerals, ans calcium suppliments are a big seller. And some of these do include magnesium as well as calcium. And some offer calcium, maagnesium, and zinc.

But take SOMTHING as long as you get 1,500 MG of calcium a day and 100% of your vitamin D requirement. Get into a bone stressing exercise program. (Mine is walking an hour a day.)

Hehe, I was just getting my weekly shopping with some friends, when I spotted this! I noted it had ALL the vitamins we mention here:

Calcium

Zinc

Magnesium

Iron

Vitamin b12

Folic Acid

(plus vitamins B C and E thrown in for good measure

:🀭: then, I noticed the label on the bottle:

πŸ˜„ For The Menopause! πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„

So, naturally, I bought it!

Fine, but do read the fine print. How many tablets do they recommend per day? What is the total calcium etc. you receive from that number of pills per day. You are looking for 1,500 MG of calcium daily and 5,000 I.U of vitamin A daily. Also 400 MG daily of magnesium and 15 MG daily of zinc.

For in a way, you ARE menopausal, or andropausal. Like a woman whose ovaries have reduced or no function (or were removed), your ultra-low levels of sex hormones brings on certain health concerns. That is why I am an active member of the internet newsgroup alt.support.menopause, and you too would be welcomed if you have questions to ask the experienced women about hot flashes, osteoporosis, HRT, and other medical issues.

Just a note to say that I've been using these vitamins along with a calcium supplement which seem to be working nicely! :)

I would strongly recommend others that may suffer with a slight depression after castration to try these (or something similar). Although they don't make you magically better, they have certainly helped limit the effects of the emotional changes.

And then I wonder ... do these feelings parallel what people call the post-natal depression. Both occur as a sudden fall in hormones, right?
