Prevalence of Transgender

We really have no good idea of how many transfolk there are out there. Each new survey seems to arrive at a higher number than the last. Here is a report on one of the best studies that I’ve found, with yet a higher number than anything I’ve seen before.

A very recent report from the Netherlands (unfortunately in the Dutch language) presented detailed data of a non-clinical sample (Kuyper, 2012).

In a sample of 4,052 men and 4,012 women, 4.6% of men and 3.2% of women expressed a degree of ambivalence regarding their gender identity, while 1.1% of men and 0.8% of women described it as incongruent with their physical bodies. There was a desire to undergo medical treatment in 0.7% of men and 0.2% of women of those who had ambivalences regarding their gender identity and in 0.3% of men and 0.05% of women of those viewed their bodies as incongruent with their gender identity (Kuyper, 2012).

Now we just need better figures on the target genders that all of these people have. Our best number on Male-to-Eunuch is still not very solid. It comes from a study of 1,049 individuals who were approved for full Male-to-Female transition in the Netherlands, complete with SRS, to be completely paid for by the national health insurance. 24% of them were satisfied once they had received either an orchiectomy or anti-androgens and did not transition further. Our best guess would be that they fit the MtE category much better than MtF, but neither of the researchers thought to ask (Cohen-Kettenis & Pfäfflin, 2009).

I am out to all of my family, friends, and co-workers. No one gives a damn - it isn't an issue. OTOH, I am not transgender - the topic of this thread.

I'm not really surprised that it's so common. Now that I've gotten more into the transgender community, I'm absolutely shocked just how many of us there are. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of transition videos on Youtube, the transgender forums are so active and diverse and gigantic that it's completely ridiculous, and I know at least three people within my own normal social circle, just from normal everyday life, who are transgender, myself included.
